192 A Brief History of Settlement and People of Little Bay by H.T. Burden (Teacher) written in 1942 states:

James Rendell came here from Three Arms about 70 years ago. One son, Charles, living here and a second son, Arthur, who migrated to the U.S.A.

FamilySearch's Newfoundland, Vital Records, 1840-1949 records the birth of Charles Philip, son of James and Elizabeth Randell, on December 22 1892 in Little Bay Islands. It is reasonable to believe Charles Philip is the son of James Randell and Elizabeth Wiseman (Births 1892-1895, Certificate Number 62001-634463 - Image 134 of 386 - Page 121 No. 31)

FamilySearch's 1921 Census of Little Bay Islands records James Randell age 64 Widowed Labourer born 1857 May Three Arms, son Arthur Randell age 14 born 1906 Nov Little Bay Islands, (son?) Charles Randell age 29 Laborer born 1891 Dec Little Bay Islands, and wife Nellie Randell age 21 born 1900 Mar Tarbock England.

FamilySearch's 1935 Census of Little Bay Islands records Charles Philip Randell age 42 born Nfld Sea Coaster, wife Nellie age 35 born England, their 3 children, and father James Randell age 77 Widowed born Nfld.

It is reasonable to believe James Randell in the above 1921 and 1935 Censuses residing with his son Charles Philip is the husband of Elizabeth Wiseman.
RANDELL, James (I1305)

193 A Brief History of Settlement and People of Little Bay by H.T. Burden (Teacher) written in 1942 states:

Philip Wiseman and William Mursell came here [i.e. Little Bay Islands] in 1851, 90 years ago and settled at what is now known as Mursell’s Cove. They both came from Herring Neck.

Wiliam Mursell had two sons, George and Richard. Their descendants are scattered around the globe and no Mursell’s now live on the Island.

Richard Mursell, husband of Dorcas Wiseman, was born in Herring Neck according to the 1921 Census of Little Bay Islands. It is reasonable to conclude he is the son of William Mursell who came to Little Bay Islands in 1851.
MURSELL, Richard (I1312)

194 A Brief History of Settlement and People of Little Bay by H.T. Burden (Teacher) written in 1942 states:

Robert Hull, John Compton and John Hibbs came here from Twillingate about 85 years ago.

John Hibbs had two sons: John, the father of John and James; and James, no descendants.

These are the only mentions of Hibbs families in Little Bay Islands.

The Newfoundland & Labrador GenWeb contains Jill Marshall's transcript of the Rooms Parish Record Collection (PRC) for Twillingate Methodist Baptisms (Box 1: 1853-1857 and 1858-1861). This transcript is for baptisms missing from the Registers of Vital Statistics. There is a comment that "Maiden names added by Jill Marshall where known from marriage records or compiled family histories". There are the following baptisms:

1. Maria Ann age 2 months born Twillingate, daughter of John Hibbs and Mirab (sic) Oxford, baptized September 11 1854 at Twillingate Methodist
2. Livinia age 2 months born Harts Cove, daughter of John Hibbs and Mereb (sic) Oxford, baptized July 6 1856 at Twillingate Methodist

FamilySearch's Newfoundland, Vital Statistics, 1753-1893 records the following baptisms:

1. Leah Ann born October 6 1859 in Little Bay Islands, daughter of John and Meral (sic) Hibbs, baptized April 28 1860 at Exploits Methodist
2. Harriet born January 16 1860 in Little Bay Islands, daughter of John and Meral (sic) Hibbs, baptized August 19 1861 at Exploits Methodist
3. Martha Elizabeth born January 16 1863 in Little Bay Islands, daughter of John and Mary (sic) Hibbs, baptized September 7 1863 at Exploits Methodist
4. Josiah born February 15 1869 in Little Bay Islands, daughter of John and Minah (sic) Ibbs (sic), baptized April 4 1869 at Little Bay Islands Methodist
5. Mary born June 13 1872 in Little Bay Islands, daughter of John and Merat (sic) Ibbs (sic), baptized August 6 1872 at Little Bay Islands Methodist

The burial of Ann Hibbs, first wife of George Wiseman, on February 5 1882 at Little Bay Islands Methodist records her age as 26 1/2. This implies an approximate year and month of birth about July 1855.

There is no known baptism for an Ann Hibbs born about July 1855. With Maria Ann born about June/July 1854 and Livinia about April/May 1856, it is unlikely another child could be born about mid 1855.

Ann Hibbs, first wife of George Wiseman, may be either Maria Ann or Livinia, daughters of John and Mirab/Merat Hibbs.

The Newfoundland & Labrador GenWeb contains Jill Marshall's transcript from the Rooms Parish Record Collection (PRC) for Twillingate Methodist Marriages (Box 2: 1853-1870). The following marriage is missing from the Registers of Vital Statistics:

John Hibbs (Bachelor, Fisherman, of Twillingate) and Miriam Oxford (Spinster, of Twillingate) married on October 27 1853 at Twillingate Methodist
HIBBS, Ann (I1296)

195 A Brief History of Settlement and People of Little Bay by H.T. Burden (Teacher) written in 1942 states:

There were two George Oxfords, the first an Englishman, came here 85 years ago from Twillingate. His sons were: David, no descendants; George Thomas, father of Elias and Mrs Job Wiseman; Joseph, father of Mrs J Wells, Three Arms, and Mrs H Forward, Badger; John, father of Frank and Willis.

So, Jane Oxford, wife of Job Wiseman, is the daughter of George Thomas Oxford and brother of Elias Oxford.
OXFORD, Jane (I1366)

196 A Brief History of Settlement and People of Little Bay by H.T. Burden (Teacher) written in 1942 states:

William Anstey and John Locke came here the same year, 1851 or 1852, Anstey from Twillingate and Locke from Tizzards Harbour. They both settled at Anstey’s Cove, but later moved to this harbour. They both had large families, one fourteen and the other thirteen. …

John Locke had two sons; William still living at New York, and John, who married Sarah Jones, was the father of Lionel and Frank.

Richard Locke came here from Tizzard's Hr about 60 years ago. His sons are Alfred, James, Manuel, Lewis, and Ambrose at Springdale.

John Locke arrived on Little Bay Islands in 1851 or 1852. This is before the birth of Phoebe Locke, wife of John Wiseman. It is reasonable to believe Phoebe Locke is the daughter of Richard Locke who came to Little Bay Islands about 1882. Phoebe Locke's marriage to John Wiseman in 1876 records her residence as Tizzard's Hr.
LOCKE, Phoebe (I1302)

199 A letter from Irene (King) Vardy dated September 9, 2002 identifies Jack Martin as the wife of Irene King, daughter of Arthur William King and Henrietta Goodyear. Irene (King) Vardy writes "She [Irene King] married late in life to a Jack Martin and they lived outside of New York for some time. When he died she moved back to Scarborough, Ont. and lived in a nursing home there."

Ancestry's 1940 Census of Brooklyn, New York City, King's County, New York records Patrick Martin age 44 born New York and his wife Irene age 44 born Newfoundland. Patrick Martin is a Chauffer for a Silk Firm. There is no-one else residing with them.

Irene's implied year of birth is about 1895-1896 and she was born in Newfoundland, consistent with the birth of Irene, daughter of Arthur William King and Henrietta Goodyear. So, although Irene (King) Vardy's letter identifies Irene King's husband as Jack, this Patrick Martin in the 1940 Census is a candidate to be the husband of Irene, daughter of Arthur William King and Henrietta Goodyear. Possibly Irene (King) Vardy mis-remembered Martin's first name or Jack was his "known as" name.

Ancestry's New York State, Death Index, 1957-1968 records the death of Patrick Martin age 63 (born about 1894) died April 11 1957 residence Centreport, Suffolk, New York. No other information is recorded. He is a candidate to be the husband of Irene King as his approximate year of birth is consistent.
MARTIN, Jack (I2118)

200 Abraham Dugas' burial in Saint Esprit records his age as 85 ("quatre vingt cinq ans"). But this implies a year of birth about 1740-1741 which is very unlikely given his 5 brothers and sisters born between September 1739 and November 1743. As his sister Marie was born about 1744 to 1745 (age 32 in the 1777 Census of Carleton), it seems more likely Abram was born in or after 1747 which is consistent with Abraham's age of 30 in the 1777 Census of Carleton. DUGAS, Abram (I4787)
