It is reasonable to believe George, son of James and Sarah Pavett, is the son of James Pavitt and Sarah Harkins baptized April 20 1755 at St Mary the Virgin, Matching. The Will for George Pavitt is available from The National Archives website (Reference PROB-11-1442-34). This Will identifies George Pavitt of Little Hallingbury as a Miller; names his wife Elizabeth; names his sons James, George, Thomas, William, Daniel, and Joseph; names his daughters Mary, Nancy, and Elizabeth; and assigns his eldest son James Pavitt and Thomas Nottage as Executors. The Will is dated December 11 1800 and proved April 10 1806. FamilySearch's England Births and Christenings, 1538-1975 records baptisms for 9 children of George and Elizabeth Pavitt in Independent, Hatfield Heath, Essex. These baptized children are consistent with all children named in George Pavitt's Will, including his eldest son James. Hatfield Heath is 5 miles southeast of Bishop's Stortford. FamilySearch's England, Essex Non-Conformist Church Records, 1613-1971 record the following baptisms for children of George and Elizabeth Pavitt at Independent, Hatfield Heath, Essex: 1. Burnt Head Church of England Cemetery contains a joint tombstone for "Robert Taylor Died May 15, 1889 Aged 69 Yrs" and "Also His Wife Patience Died Feby 10 1886 Aged 72 Yrs". The Rooms Parish Record Collection (PRC) for Burnt Head Church of England does not record burials for a Robert Taylor who died in 1889 or a Patience Taylor who died in 1886. Patience Taylor age 72 who died February 10 1886 was born about 1813. Robert Taylor and Patience Taylor were married December 25 1847 and their last 3 known children were Elizabeth, Eliza, and Solomon baptized June 1863, October 1864, and June 1866 respectively. It is unreasonable to believe Patience Taylor born about 1813 could be the mother of 3 children baptized 1863 to 1866 when she would be from about 50 to about 53 years old. It is reasonable to conclude Robert and Patience Taylor with a joint tombstone in Burnt Head Church of England Cemetery are not the parents of Elizabeth Taylor, wife of George Wiseman. But I can not be certain Robert Taylor and Patience Taylor (parents of Elizabeth Taylor, wife of George Wiseman) are the parents of all the children as I have currently recorded because there is a second family of Robert and Patience Taylor in or near Burnt Head. The Rooms Parish Record Collection (PRC) records the burial of Robert Taylor age 69 who died May 22 1891 and was buried May 25 1891 at Burnt Head Church of England. This is the only burial for a Robert Taylor at Burnt Head Church of England between 1842 and 1895. FamilySearch's Newfoundland, Vital Records, 1840-1949 records the following Death Registrations for a Robert Taylor born between 1800 and 1830: 1. Robert Taylor age 69 died May 22 1891 Burnt Head; born and buried Burnt Head (Deaths 1891-1891, Volume 01 - Image 24 of 112 - Page 25, No. 30). This Robert Taylor was born about 1821-1822 which is before any Taylor's moved to Burnt Head. It is unlikely he was born in Burnt Head. This is the only Robert Taylor Vital Record death that occurred in Burnt Head. He is Robert Taylor age 69 who died May 22 1891 and was buried May 25 1891 at Burnt Head Church of England. The 1805 Conception Bay Plantations Book for Cupids records only one Taylor who is in Plantation 625: Robert Taylor, 127 yds. from E. to W. bounded on the E. by Jno. Traverse on the W. by Wm. Pinsent 105 yds. from H.W.M. to the N. bounded on the N. by the woods; 1 Stage 1 Flake 1 House 1 Garden Plantation 625 is owned and occupied by Robert Taylor who cut and cleared the Plantation in 1805. Although this is the only Plantation owned by a Taylor in Cupids, there are many Plantations owned by Taylor's in Port de Grave. "Well off" and "Distressed" are indications of the "Means of Providing". The Rooms Parish Record Collection (PRC) includes Parson John Percey's records for Brigus Methodist 1804-1820 as transcribed from the original by Capt. George Gushue. Newfoundland's Grand Banks website (in Parish Records > Harbour Grace) includes a transcript of Parson John Percey's records. The following Taylor families are recorded. 1. The burial for 14 month old Elizabeth Taylor on June 11 1816 records her parents as Robert Taylor and Jane Bussy of Cupids. This is likely Robert Taylor Junior in the 1817 Census above. This Voters List records 10 voters in Burnt Head: William Dawe, John Dawe, Robert Fowler, Henry Lane, William Morgan, Edward Morgan, William Newell, George Newell, William Walsh, and Patrick Walsh. It seems the Taylor's arrived in Burnt Head after 1835 or none were eligible to vote. The Newfoundland and Labrador GenWeb's transcript of the 1835 Voters List for South Side of Spaniards Bay Gut to the North Side of Port de Grave Northern Gut records 6 Taylor's in Port de Grave namely: Henry (Hill), Robert (Hill), Jacob of Robert, Henry of William, John, and Jacob (resides Meadows). The "(Hill)" may indicate they reside on Taylor's Hill or another hill. All those in the 1835 Voters List were at least 21 years old and born before 1815. Newfoundland's Grand Banks transcript of Lovell's 1871 Business Directory for the District of Port de Grave records the following 14 Taylor’s in Cupids: Isaac (Fisherman), Isaac (Fisherman), Esau (Fisherman), J (Fisherman), John (Fisherman), John (Fisherman), Joseph (Fisherman), Robert (Fisherman), Robert (Planter), Robert Junr (Fisherman), Nathan (Fisherman), William (Fisherman), William (Fisherman), and William (Fisherman). This transcript does not record any Taylor’s in Burnt Head, and the only Taylor recorded in Brigus is Rev. Robert H. Taylor. This Directory may record the Burnt Head Taylor’s in Cupids. The 1869 Voters List for Burnt Head records Robert Taylor Senior and Robert Taylor Junior. The 1871 Business Directory for Cupids records Robert Taylor (Fisherman), Robert Taylor (Planter), and Robert Taylor Junr (Fisherman). It seems unusual there is no Robert Taylor Senior in the 1871 Business Directory. Robert Taylor Senior may have died between 1869 and 1871, may be Robert Taylor (Planter) or Robert Taylor (Fisherman), or may not work in a profession to be included in the Business Directory. During the 1850's and 1860’s, there are two families headed by a Robert Taylor baptizing children in Burnt Head: Robert Taylor and Patience Taylor, and Robert Taylor and Alice Fowler. Robert Taylor (Planter) and Robert Taylor (Fisherman) in the 1869 Voters List for Burnt Head may be these Robert Taylor’s. But the baptisms of their children always record both these Robert Taylor’s as Fishermen. The FHSNL Voters Lists include the 1889 Voters Lists for Port de Grave District (GN 43/7 Box 13 - Port de Grave - 1889). The 1889 Voters List for Burnt Head records the following 9 Taylor’s: Robert (Deep Gulch - Householder), Esau (Deep Gulch - Householder), Robert John (Deep Gulch - 31 William), William (Deep Gulch - 29 William), William Sr (Deep Gulch - Householder), Abraham (Deep Gulch - 25 Esau), Nathaniel (Deep Gulch - Householder), Jacob (Deep Gulch - 29 Henry), and John James (Church Hill - Householder) (Images 59-60 of 79). The Administration includes a Petition from Jonas Soper, Henry Shepperd, and Henry Taylor dated May 24 1841 which states Robert Taylor Senior of Cupids died in June 1840 (Images 939–940). If born about 1831-1832, it is unreasonable to believe Robert Taylor, son of Robert Taylor and Jane Noseworthy, would marry Patience Taylor in December 1847 when he was about 15-16 years old. If born about 1826-1827, he would be about age 20-21 in December 1847. A marriage is more likely, but he still seems a bit young to marry. John, son of Thomas Pike King and Emily Julia Pike of Little Catalina, born November 20 1855 The witnesses to the marriage of John King and Susanna Whelan were Thomas King and Mark Dalton. Having Thomas King as a witness favours John King being the son of Thomas Pike King and Emily Julia Pike. John King, son of Thomas Pike King and Emily Julia Pike, was born November 20 1855. The marriage of John King and Susanna Whelan occurred June 11 1874 when John King, son of Thomas Pike King and Emily Julia Pike, was 18. This seems unusually young to marry. John King and Susanna Whelan's first child was born August 13 1875; so there was no need to rush their marriage due to pregnancy. This disfavours John King, husband of Susanna Whelan, being the son of Thomas Pike King and Emily Julia Pike. The siblings of John King, son of William King and Susanna Wheadon, include 2 sisters named Mahala, a sister named Susanna Pike, and a brother named Benjamin. John King and Susanna Whelan named two of their three children Mahala and Benjamin. The use of such uncommon names favours John King being the son of William King and Susanna Wheadon. FamilySearch's Newfoundland Vital Statistics, 1753-1893 has one baptism of a John (or variant spelling) King in Catalina or Little Catalina between 1839 and 1849; namely Jonathan, son of John and Mary King born June 9 1844 in Catalina. But, John and Mary King had later children (i.e. Jane in 1846, Peter in 1848, and Mary Jane in 1853) born in Greenspond indicating they left Catalina. The Will is dated July 24 1836 and bequeaths "to my brother Samuel Pike and to my nephew John Pike son of Samuel" and to "Thomas Pike my brother". The Will appoints "Wm Taylor Senr of Carbonear and Samuel Pike my Brother Executors". A Petition to the court dated September 17 1836 from the Executors named in the Will asks to be appointed as Executors. This Petition states "John Pike left no widow nor children him surviving and the next of kin an (sic) Samuel Pike a Brother one of your Petitioners and a half Brother Thomas Pike". The testator John Pike has a half brother Thomas Pike. As they are both surnamed Pike, it is more likely the mother of the older of John and Thomas died, and their father remarried. But, it is also possible their father died, and their widowed mother remarried another Pike. The Rooms Provincial Archives has a collection of Newfoundland Voters Lists. I found him sitting outside his door facing south - the sun was shining brightly - he was getting the full benefit of it and highly enjoyed it as he been confined to his bed for several months from severe sickness. His bodily frame was fine - his head was superb like a piece of polished marble - not a hair on it. His memory was good. He told me a good deal about his early adventures and exploits: and about many of the first settlers in Carbonear, the adjacent coves, and of his going with others to live on Carbonear Island - their guns & fortifications to resist the attacks of the French & their Indian allies, &c which they much dreaded. He had made several voyages to Spain & Portugal in fish laden vessels in his early years, &c. I have an idea that this very aged man - Thomas Pike was the brother of the father of Francis Pike, Senr. of my grandfather, Wm. There is a burial for John Pike age 89 on July 4 1833 at Carbonear Methodist, but no tombstone for a Thomas Pike or a John Pike who died in 1833. It is not clear if there were two burials or only one, and, if one, whether the deceased was named Thomas or John. The Newfoundland Ancestor periodical published by the then Newfoundland and Labrador Genealogical Society in Summer 2001 (Volume 17, 3 Pages 158-159) has an article of material presented by Gilbert Pike on October 26 1999 about Pike Families in Carbonear before 1800. This material includes the marriage and children for the following Thomas Pike's: 1. Thomas Pike and Jane Powell married 1783 in Harbour Grace Church of England. William, last known child of William and Mary Adams, was born May 24 1846 in Harbour Grace. 2. William Adams of Harbour Grace died January 19 1849 in Harbour Grace. 3. No further children of William and Mary Adams were baptized at Harbour Grace Church of England after 1849. 4. Mary Adams, widow of Harbour Grace, married James Higgins October 7 1851 at Harbour Grace. 5. The only other Harbour Grace Church of England burial for a William Adams of Harbour Grace occurred May 1 1861. This William Adams was 15 years old, implying he was born about 1845 to 1846. Obviously, he was not the husband of Mary Goodger. He is most likely the son of William and Mary Adams who was born May 24 1846. So, it is reasonable to conclude it was Mary Goodger who was the Mary Adams, widow, who married James Higgins October 7 1851 at Harbour Grace. There is evidence that at least some children of Mary (Goodger) Adams/Higgins remained in Harbour Grace. 1. Elizabeth Adams, spinster of Harbour Grace married Tobias Shepherd, bachelor of Harbour Grace, December 19 1867 at Harbour Grace. The witnesses were George Shephard and Rose Ann Noel. Tobias and Elizabeth Shepherd had the following children baptized in Harbour Grace: Albert (baptized November 25 1868), Eldred (baptized March 30 1870), and Elkanah (baptized July 30 1871). There were no further children of Tobias and Elizabeth Shepherd baptized at Harbour Grace Church of England. 2. The Stonepics Index has an entry for "Sheppard, Tobias (1905) & Albert" in Harbour Grace South Side (i.e. located on NF126 HAG13). The combination of Tobias and Albert indicates this entry is likely for Tobias, husband of Elizabeth Adams, and their son Albert. The Death Registration for Tobias Sheppard records his death on November 14 1905 in Harbour Grace at age 64. He was born and buried in Harbour Grace South. Tobias' age of 64 implies a year of birth about 1841 which is consistent with the birth of Isaac Tobias, son of John and Maria Shephard of Harbour Grace, on February 11 1842. 3. Patience Maria Higgins, spinster of Harbour Grace, married Moses Shepherd, bachelor of Harbour Grace, on August 27 1871 at Harbour Grace. The witnesses were Henry (Gosse or Jones?) & (Theresa?) Gosse. Moses and Patience Shepherd had the following child baptized in Harbour Grace: Abijah (baptized June 23 1872). 4. Jacob Adams, bachelor of Harbour Grace married Caroline Weeks, of Harbour Grace, May 31 1878 at Harbour Grace. One witness was Emma Jane Higgins (daughter of James and Mary Higgins). So, it seems reasonable to conclude that Mary (Goodger) Adams/Higgins remained in Harbour Grace. There is a burial for Mary Higgins April 21 1890 age 76 of Harbour Grace South Side at Harbour Grace St. Peter's Church of England. The Harbour Grace Church of England only records baptisms for one mother named Mary Higgins; namely daughters Emma Jane and Patience Maria of James and Mary Higgins. There are no Mary Higgins, but three Mary Anne Higgins, baptized at Harbour Grace Church of England up to and including 1827. These three Mary Anne Higgins were born between 1818 and 1821, and could be the Mary Higgins buried in 1890 (assuming she was unmarried). There are the following marriages at Harbour Grace Church of England for: 1. Mary Higgins, spinster, and Nathaniel Sheppard on December 26 1839 2. Mary Ann Higgins and James Bray on January 17 1842 Mary Ann Higgins witnessed the marriage of Frederick James Dancey and Mary Ann Whiting on September 28 1844. This is after the dates of the above marriages in 1839 and 1842. But, there is a burial for Mary-Ann Higgins on March 30 1845 age 25 of Harbour Grace who may be this Mary Ann Higgins. So, of the three Mary Anne Higgins baptized at Harbour Grace Church of England up to and including 1827, two may have married and one may have died in 1845. So, the Mary Higgins who died in 1890 may have been a widow. If so, she was very likely the widow of James Higgins. The first Gudger baptism at St. Stephens Church of England, Greenspond occurs August 14 1832 (for Richard, son of John and Elizabeth Goodens). The last Gudger event for John Gudger and Elizabeth Whelan of Harbour Grace South Side is the baptism of their daughter Prudence on October 2 1829 at Harbour Grace Church of England. So, John Gudger and Elizabeth Whelan of Harbour Grace South Side left Harbour Grace sometime after October 1829, and arrived at Cat Harbour sometime before September 1831 (as son Richard's place of birth is recorded as Cat Harbour). I have previously concluded James Gudger in the 1836 Census of Cat Harbour is the husband of Susanna French. See Notes for James Gudger, husband of Susanna French, for more detail. It is reasonable to conclude John Gudger and James Gudger travelled at the same time from Harbour Grace to Cat Harbour (based on the letter from Thomas H. Goodyear dated March 19 1995 and the Known History of the Goodyear Family Presently Living at Grand Falls written by Josiah Goodyear in 1964 or 1965). It is difficult to believe James Gudger left his daughter Mary in Harbour Grace when he moved to Cat Harbour as Mary was less than 10 years old when the move occurred. However, James' daughters Sarah (baptized January 3 1814) and Susanna (born September 24 1816) were older and may have been able to obtain employment. In the 1836 Census of Cat Harbour, James Gudger's family consists of 1 Female 14 to 60 and no other Females. As James' wife Susanna died in 1829, this Female is likely one of his daughters Sarah, Susanna, or Mary; or perhaps a second wife if James re-married. The burial for Mary Higgins on April 21 1890 age 76 of Harbour Grace South Side implies this Mary was born about 1813 to 1814. So, William, son of John and Elizabeth Gardner/Garner, is a candidate to be William Gardner, husband of Sarah unknown. John and Elizabeth Gardner reside in Luton for a long period of time based on events at St. Mary's. These include the baptisms of their six known children from 1768 to 1779; the burial of Elizabeth, wife of John Gardner, in 1786; the marriage of John Gardner to Jane Stephens/Stevens in 1790; the burial of Sarah, daughter of William and Sarah Gardner, in 1797; and the burial of Jane, wife of John Gardner Senior, in 1805. As well, there is a burial for John Gardener in 1816 at age 78 at St. Mary's, implying an approximate year of birth about 1737 to 1738. John Gardner's approximate year of birth is consistent with the birth of the six known children of John and Elizabeth Gardner, from 1768 to 1779; and the approximate year of birth of 1745 for John Gardner's second wife Jane Stephens/Stevens who was buried in January 1805 at age 59. So, it is likely the John Gardener buried in 1816 at age 78 is the husband of Elizabeth and of Jane Stephens/Stevens. With this indication John Gardner resided in Luton during all of his adult years, it is reasonable to believe at least some of his children remained in Luton. It is then reasonable to believe his son William remained in Luton as there is a burial for a William Gardner which is consistent with the baptism of William, son of John and Elizabeth Gardner. It is preferable to have further supporting evidence. FamilySearch's Bedfordshire Parish Registers, 1538-1983 does not record the baptism of a John Gard[e/i]ner between 1730 and 1750. FamilySearch's England Births and Christenings, 1538-1975 record many baptisms of a John Gard[e/i]ner between 1730 and 1750 with 4 in Bedfordshire: 1. Also near this place lie seven of his children. A description of the Luton Union Workhouse from The Workhouse website located at http://www.workhouses.org.uk/Luton/ states: The composition of the new Luton Poor Law Union was the subject of intensive lobbying by one of the principal landowners in the area, the Marquis of Bute. Like many large landowners, Lord Bute was keen for his estates to fall within a single moderately-sized union, so as to maximise his influence on the new Board of Guardians. The new Luton union was officially formed on 16th April 1835. Its operation was overseen by an elected Board of Guardians, 21 in number, representing its 15 constituent parishes as listed below (figures in brackets indicate numbers of Guardians if more than one): County of Bedford: Barton in the Clay, Caddington — part of, Dunstable (2), Eaton Bray (until 1845), Houghton Regis (2), Humbershoe, Luton (5), Streatley with Sharpenhoe, Studham - part of, Sundon, Totternhoe, Whipsnade. County of Hertford: Caddington - part of (2), Kensworth, Studham - part of. Later Additions (all from 1896): Hyde, Leagrave, Limbury, Stopsley,. The population falling within the Union at the 1831 census had been 15,483 with parishes ranging in size from from Whipsnade (population 204) to Luton itself (5,683). The average annual poor-rate expenditure for the period 1831-34 had been £9,016 or 11s.8d. per head of the population. At its first meeting, the Board elected the Marquis of Bute as its Chairman. Lord Bute donated a piece of land on which to erect a new workhouse at the west side of Dunstable Road. The Poor Law Commissioners authorised an expenditure of £4,655 on construction of the building which opened in 1836 and was to accommodate up to 300 inmates. The building, designed by John Williams, had an unusual plan which combined elements of two other popular layouts - Sampson Kempthorne's square plan and the courtyard plan devised by Sir Francis Head. The original structure had a courtyard-style outer perimeter of two-storeyed accommodation ranges, rooms in the upper storey being accessed by cast-iron galleries attached to the inner sides.
