| When was George Pavitt born? It is reasonable to believe: a. George was born after the marriage of his parents James Pavitt and Sarah Harkins in February 1753 b. George was at least age 18 when he married Elizabeth Nottage in March 1779, implying a year of birth no later than 1761 FamilySearch's England, Essex, Parish Registers, 1538-1997 records 2 baptisms of a George Pavitt between 1753 and 1761: a. George, son of James and Sarah Pavett, on April 20 1755 in Essex (no town is recorded) b. George, son of George and Mary Pavet, on February 5 1758 in Great Canfield, Essex FreeReg records 3 baptisms of a George Pavitt between 1753 and 1761: a. George, son of James and Sarah Pavett, on April 20 1755 at St Mary the Virgin, Matching, Essex b. George, son of Will and Sarah Pavitt, on February 6 1757 at All Saints, North Benfleet, Essex c. George, son of George and Mary Pavet, on February 5 1758 in St Mary, Great Canfield, Essex Matching is 17 km south of Ugley (where James Pavitt and Sarah Harkins married), and 10 km south of Bishop's Stortford (where 4 subsequent children of James Pavitt and Sarah Harkins were baptized). It is reasonable to believe George, son of James and Sarah Pavett, is the son of James Pavitt and Sarah Harkins baptized April 20 1755 at St Mary the Virgin, Matching. The Will for George Pavitt is available from The National Archives website (Reference PROB-11-1442-34). This Will identifies George Pavitt of Little Hallingbury as a Miller; names his wife Elizabeth; names his sons James, George, Thomas, William, Daniel, and Joseph; names his daughters Mary, Nancy, and Elizabeth; and assigns his eldest son James Pavitt and Thomas Nottage as Executors. The Will is dated December 11 1800 and proved April 10 1806. FamilySearch's England Births and Christenings, 1538-1975 records baptisms for 9 children of George and Elizabeth Pavitt in Independent, Hatfield Heath, Essex. These baptized children are consistent with all children named in George Pavitt's Will, including his eldest son James. Hatfield Heath is 5 miles southeast of Bishop's Stortford. FamilySearch's England, Essex Non-Conformist Church Records, 1613-1971 record the following baptisms for children of George and Elizabeth Pavitt at Independent, Hatfield Heath, Essex: 1. James born November 19 1780 baptized December 6 1780 2. Nancy born May 28 1782 baptized August 9 1782 3. Elizabeth born November 27 1785 baptized December 21 1785 4. George born April 24 1787 baptized May 15 1787 5. Thomas born November 11 1788 baptized December 2 1788 6. William born August 11 1790 baptized September 29 1790 7. Daniel born June 4 1792 baptized July 3 1792 8. Henry born January 5 1794 baptized January 31 1794 9. Joseph born April 24 1796 baptized May 20 1796 10. Mary born May 8 1799 baptized May 31 1799 11. Peter born February 26 1801 baptized March 20 1801 Henry and Peter are not named in George Pavitt's Will. Henry likely died young, and Peter was born after the Will was written. Otherwise, all known children are named in George Pavitt's Will. The Essex Record Office makes available images of Essex County Parish Registers through its Essex Archives Online website (for a fee). There is no record of a George Pavitt burial in Little Hallingbury between January 1804 and April 1806 (D/P 28/1/1 Image 50 of 53). | PAVITT, George (I5821)

| Where and when did Robert Taylor, husband of Patience Taylor and father of Elizabeth Taylor (wife of George Wiseman) die, and what is his approximate year of birth? Burnt Head Church of England Cemetery contains a joint tombstone for "Robert Taylor Died May 15, 1889 Aged 69 Yrs" and "Also His Wife Patience Died Feby 10 1886 Aged 72 Yrs". The Rooms Parish Record Collection (PRC) for Burnt Head Church of England does not record burials for a Robert Taylor who died in 1889 or a Patience Taylor who died in 1886. Patience Taylor age 72 who died February 10 1886 was born about 1813. Robert Taylor and Patience Taylor were married December 25 1847 and their last 3 known children were Elizabeth, Eliza, and Solomon baptized June 1863, October 1864, and June 1866 respectively. It is unreasonable to believe Patience Taylor born about 1813 could be the mother of 3 children baptized 1863 to 1866 when she would be from about 50 to about 53 years old. It is reasonable to conclude Robert and Patience Taylor with a joint tombstone in Burnt Head Church of England Cemetery are not the parents of Elizabeth Taylor, wife of George Wiseman. But I can not be certain Robert Taylor and Patience Taylor (parents of Elizabeth Taylor, wife of George Wiseman) are the parents of all the children as I have currently recorded because there is a second family of Robert and Patience Taylor in or near Burnt Head. The Rooms Parish Record Collection (PRC) records the burial of Robert Taylor age 69 who died May 22 1891 and was buried May 25 1891 at Burnt Head Church of England. This is the only burial for a Robert Taylor at Burnt Head Church of England between 1842 and 1895. FamilySearch's Newfoundland, Vital Records, 1840-1949 records the following Death Registrations for a Robert Taylor born between 1800 and 1830: 1. Robert Taylor age 69 died May 22 1891 Burnt Head; born and buried Burnt Head (Deaths 1891-1891, Volume 01 - Image 24 of 112 - Page 25, No. 30). This Robert Taylor was born about 1821-1822 which is before any Taylor's moved to Burnt Head. It is unlikely he was born in Burnt Head. (See 1835 Voters List for South Side of Port de Grave, Northern Gut, to the North Point of Turk's Gut below for those recorded in Burnt Head.) This is the only Robert Taylor Vital Record death that occurred in Burnt Head. He is Robert Taylor age 69 who died May 22 1891 and was buried May 25 1891 at Burnt Head Church of England. There is no known tombstone for this Robert Taylor in either Cupids or Burnt Head. 2. Robert Taylor age 73 died February 3 1892 Change Islands; born Cupids and buried Change Islands (Deaths 1891-1891, Volume 01 - Image 95 of 112 - Page 95, No. 7). This Robert Taylor was born about 1818. Change Islands is west of Fogo Island. 3. Robert Taylor age 75 died January 20 1900 Boot Harbour; born Twillingate and buried Boot Harbour (Deaths 1898-1902, Volume 03 - Image 282 of 467 - Page 275, No. 22). This Robert Taylor was born about 1824. It is reasonable to conclude he is the husband of Alice Fowler and moved to Boot Harbour after Alice Fowler's death in 1878 in Burnt Head. See Notes for Robert Taylor, husband of Alice Fowler, for further information. 4. Robert Taylor age 78 died January 2 1904 Taylor’s Hill (District of Port de Grave); born not recorded and buried Ship Cove (near Port de Grave) (Deaths 1902-1903, Volume 04 - Image 133 of 299 - Page 145, No. 21). This Robert Taylor was born about 1820-1821. 5. Robert Taylor age 88 died August 15 1909 St. John's; born Port de Grave and buried St. John's (Deaths 1907-1910, Volume 05 - Image 59 of 418 - Page 58, No. 25). This Robert Taylor was born about 1820-1821. 6. Robert Taylor age 85 died November 16 1912 Tickle Cove; born Tacks Beach and buried Tickle Cove (Deaths 1911-1914, Volume 06 - Image 260 of 458 - Page 294, No. 22). This Robert Taylor was born about 1827. Tack's Beach is located on King Island in Placentia Bay, and Tickle Cove is located northwest of Catalina. Robert Taylor (#6) born Tacks Beach and died Tickle Cove seems an unlikely candidate. Unfortunately, Robert Taylor is a common name and there is no evidence of the place of death for Robert Taylor, husband of Patience Taylor. If he remained in Burnt Head until his death, the only candidate is #1. If he did not remain in Burnt Head, #'s 2, 4, and 5 are candidates. Who are the Taylor's recorded in Burnt Head and Cupids? The 1805 Conception Bay Plantations Book for Cupids records only one Taylor who is in Plantation 625: Robert Taylor, 127 yds. from E. to W. bounded on the E. by Jno. Traverse on the W. by Wm. Pinsent 105 yds. from H.W.M. to the N. bounded on the N. by the woods; 1 Stage 1 Flake 1 House 1 Garden Plantation 625 is owned and occupied by Robert Taylor who cut and cleared the Plantation in 1805. Although this is the only Plantation owned by a Taylor in Cupids, there are many Plantations owned by Taylor's in Port de Grave. Newfoundland's Grand Banks transcript of the Cupids Census of September 1817 records the following Taylor's: 31 William Taylor: 1 Man, 1 Woman, 2 Children, 1 Male Servant; Well off 32 George Taylor: 1 Man, 1 Woman, 1 Child, 1 Male Servant; Well off 53 Rick Taylor: 1 Man, 1 Woman, 5 Children, no Servants; Distressed 54 Rt [Robert] Taylor Sr: 1 Man, 1 Woman, 5 Children, 3 Male & 1 Female Servants; Well off 55 Rt [Robert] Taylor Jr: 1 Man, 1 Woman, 1 Child; Distressed Based on the numbering, it appears William and George reside adjacent, and Rick, Robert Sr, and Robert Jr reside adjacent. "Well off" and "Distressed" are indications of the "Means of Providing". The Rooms Parish Record Collection (PRC) includes Parson John Percey's records for Brigus Methodist 1804-1820 as transcribed from the original by Capt. George Gushue. Newfoundland's Grand Banks website (in Parish Records > Harbour Grace) includes a transcript of Parson John Percey's records. The following Taylor families are recorded. 1. William Taylor married Sarah Keeting, both of Cupids, on November 10 1814. 2. George Taylor married Eliza Payton, both of Cupids, on November 28 1816. 3. Robert Taylor married Jane Noseworthy. Their daughter Susanna was baptized June 5 1809. This is likely Robert Taylor Senior in the 1817 Census above. It is less likely Robert Taylor Junior married Jane Noseworthy in or before 1809 as Robert Taylor Junior is recorded as having only 1 child in 1817. 4. Robert Taylor married Jane Bussy. The burial for 14 month old Elizabeth Taylor on June 11 1816 records her parents as Robert Taylor and Jane Bussy of Cupids. This is likely Robert Taylor Junior in the 1817 Census above. The Newfoundland and Labrador GenWeb's transcript of the 1835 Voters List for South Side of Port de Grave, Northern Gut, to the North Point of Turk's Gut records 5 Taylor's in Cupids namely: Thomas, George, William, Jacob, and Robert. There are no Taylor's recorded in Burnt Head or Brigus. This Voters List records 10 voters in Burnt Head: William Dawe, John Dawe, Robert Fowler, Henry Lane, William Morgan, Edward Morgan, William Newell, George Newell, William Walsh, and Patrick Walsh. It seems the Taylor's arrived in Burnt Head after 1835 or none were eligible to vote. The Newfoundland and Labrador GenWeb's transcript of the 1835 Voters List for South Side of Spaniards Bay Gut to the North Side of Port de Grave Northern Gut records 6 Taylor's in Port de Grave namely: Henry (Hill), Robert (Hill), Jacob of Robert, Henry of William, John, and Jacob (resides Meadows). The "(Hill)" may indicate they reside on Taylor's Hill or another hill. All those in the 1835 Voters List were at least 21 years old and born before 1815. The Rooms Provincial Archives has a collection of Newfoundland Voters Lists. Images of some of these Voters Lists are available at the Family History Society of Newfoundland and Labrador (FHSNL). These Voters Lists include the 1869 Voters Lists for Brigus Division (GN 43/7 Box 8A). The following 8 Taylor's are recorded in Burnt Head: Solomon, Henry, Joseph, William, Robert Senior, Robert Junior, Esau, and John (Image 27 of 31). Also recorded are the following 3 Taylor's in Cupids: William, Thomas, and Jonathan (Image 27 of 31). Newfoundland's Grand Banks transcript of Lovell's 1871 Business Directory for the District of Port de Grave records the following 14 Taylor’s in Cupids: Isaac (Fisherman), Isaac (Fisherman), Esau (Fisherman), J (Fisherman), John (Fisherman), John (Fisherman), Joseph (Fisherman), Robert (Fisherman), Robert (Planter), Robert Junr (Fisherman), Nathan (Fisherman), William (Fisherman), William (Fisherman), and William (Fisherman). This transcript does not record any Taylor’s in Burnt Head, and the only Taylor recorded in Brigus is Rev. Robert H. Taylor. This Directory may record the Burnt Head Taylor’s in Cupids. The 1869 Voters List for Burnt Head records Robert Taylor Senior and Robert Taylor Junior. The 1871 Business Directory for Cupids records Robert Taylor (Fisherman), Robert Taylor (Planter), and Robert Taylor Junr (Fisherman). It seems unusual there is no Robert Taylor Senior in the 1871 Business Directory. Robert Taylor Senior may have died between 1869 and 1871, may be Robert Taylor (Planter) or Robert Taylor (Fisherman), or may not work in a profession to be included in the Business Directory. During the 1850's and 1860’s, there are two families headed by a Robert Taylor baptizing children in Burnt Head: Robert Taylor and Patience Taylor, and Robert Taylor and Alice Fowler. Robert Taylor (Planter) and Robert Taylor (Fisherman) in the 1869 Voters List for Burnt Head may be these Robert Taylor’s. But the baptisms of their children always record both these Robert Taylor’s as Fishermen. The FHSNL Voters Lists include the 1889 Voters Lists for Port de Grave District (GN 43/7 Box 13 - Port de Grave - 1889). The 1889 Voters List for Burnt Head records the following 9 Taylor’s: Robert (Deep Gulch - Householder), Esau (Deep Gulch - Householder), Robert John (Deep Gulch - 31 William), William (Deep Gulch - 29 William), William Sr (Deep Gulch - Householder), Abraham (Deep Gulch - 25 Esau), Nathaniel (Deep Gulch - Householder), Jacob (Deep Gulch - 29 Henry), and John James (Church Hill - Householder) (Images 59-60 of 79). The 1889 Voters List for Cupids records the following 5 Taylor’s: Henry William (River Head - Householder), John (River Head - Householder), Jacob (North Side - Householder), Jacob (North Side - 35 Jacob), and William (North Side - 28 Jacob) (Image 54 of 79). Only one Robert Taylor is recorded in Burnt Head; he is a Householder in Deep Gulch. The 1889 Voters List for Burnt Head was taken in September 1889 (by Richard Legge). Robert Taylor with the joint tombstone "Robert Taylor Died May 15, 1889 Aged 69 Yrs" and "Also His Wife Patience Died Feby 10 1886 Aged 72 Yrs” died before September 1889, and is not Robert Taylor in the 1889 Voters List for Burnt Head. Robert Taylor, husband of Alice Fowler, moved from Burnt Head and settled in Boot Harbour before 1889. He is not Robert Taylor in the 1889 Voters List for Burnt Head. See Notes for Robert Taylor, husband of Alice Fowler, for further information. Father's Names and Ages are only recorded for those eligible voters who are not Householders. No sons of Robert Taylor are recorded as voters. Robert Taylor and Patience Taylor had 2 known sons. One son John died in 1877 and the other son Solomon left Burnt Head (dying in Hall's Bay in 1894). Who are the parents of Robert Taylor, husband of Patience Taylor? FamilySearch’s Newfoundland Supreme Court Estate Files 1824-1930 includes the estate of Robert Taylor Senior of Cupids Planter in 1842 (Film 2056684 DGS 8123977 Images 936-944 of 1128). Robert Taylor’s Will is dated June 7 1840 and Probate is granted March 29 1842 to Jonas Soper, Henry Shepperd, and Henry Taylor who are named Executors in the Will. The Administration includes a Petition from Jonas Soper, Henry Shepperd, and Henry Taylor dated May 24 1841 which states Robert Taylor Senior of Cupids died in June 1840 (Images 939–940). The Petition names those surviving which include his wife Jane; sons Henry age 27, John age 21, Jacob age 19, and Robert age 14; and daughters Jane Gillam age 30, Sarah Jalmers age 25, and Maria Taylor age 18. FamilySearch’s Newfoundland Supreme Court Estate Files 1824-1930 includes the estate of Jane Taylor of Cupids Widow in 1853 (Film 2056748 DGS 8301616 Images 18-26 of 1138). Jane Taylor’s Will is dated September 15 1842 and Probate is granted June 10 1853 to Philip Bennett and Henry Taylor, two of the three Executors named in the Will. The Administration includes a Petition from Philip Bennett and Henry Taylor dated May 18 1853 which states Jane Taylor of Cupids Widow died in September 1852 (Images 24-25). The Petition names those surviving which include sons Henry age 38, John age 32, Jacob age 28, and Robert age 21; and daughters Rebecca Le Droe (sic) age 30, Susannah Bussey age 42, Jane Gillham age 26, and Maria Hedderson age 24. Jane Taylor, testator of the Will dated September 15 1842, is the wife of Robert Taylor Senior, testator of the Will dated June 7 1840, based on their common children. The Rooms Parish Record Collection (PRC) includes Parson John Percey's records for Brigus Methodist 1804-1820 as transcribed from the original by Capt. George Gushue. There is a baptism for Susanna, daughter of Robert Taylor and Jane Noseworthy, on June 5 1809. This Susanna is consistent with daughter Susanna Bussey age 42 named in the Petition dated May 18 1853 for Jane Taylor’s Estate. Although the Petitions for Robert Taylor and Jane Taylor are 12 years apart (in 1841 and 1853 respectively), only sons Henry and John have age differences close to this at 11 years apart. Son Robert's ages are 14 in 1841 and 21 in 1853 implying years of birth about 1826-1827 and about 1831-1832 respectively. If born about 1831-1832, it is unreasonable to believe Robert Taylor, son of Robert Taylor and Jane Noseworthy, would marry Patience Taylor in December 1847 when he was about 15-16 years old. If born about 1826-1827, he would be about age 20-21 in December 1847. A marriage is more likely, but he still seems a bit young to marry. Robert, son of Robert Taylor and Jane Noseworthy, is a candidate to be Robert Taylor, husband of Patience Taylor. But, he seems a less likely candidate. | TAYLOR, Robert (I1514)

| Who are the parents of John King, husband of Susanna Whelan? There are at least 3 candidates: 1. Jonathan, son of John and Mary King of Catalina, born June 9 1844 2. John Thomas, son of William King and Susanna Wheadon of Bradley's Cove, born February 13 1846 3. John, son of Thomas Pike King and Emily Julia Pike of Little Catalina, born November 20 1855 The witnesses to the marriage of John King and Susanna Whelan were Thomas King and Mark Dalton. Having Thomas King as a witness favours John King being the son of Thomas Pike King and Emily Julia Pike. John King, son of Thomas Pike King and Emily Julia Pike, was born November 20 1855. The marriage of John King and Susanna Whelan occurred June 11 1874 when John King, son of Thomas Pike King and Emily Julia Pike, was 18. This seems unusually young to marry. John King and Susanna Whelan's first child was born August 13 1875; so there was no need to rush their marriage due to pregnancy. This disfavours John King, husband of Susanna Whelan, being the son of Thomas Pike King and Emily Julia Pike. The siblings of John King, son of William King and Susanna Wheadon, include 2 sisters named Mahala, a sister named Susanna Pike, and a brother named Benjamin. John King and Susanna Whelan named two of their three children Mahala and Benjamin. The use of such uncommon names favours John King being the son of William King and Susanna Wheadon. The use of these forenames likely indicates the presence of William King, husband of Susanna Wheadon, in Little Catalina. Benjamin Snelgrove is the full forename of John King and Susanna Whelan's son. William King of Little Catalina married Maria Snelgrove Johnson of Little Catalina on May 2 1847 in Little Catalina. The use of Snelgrove as Benjamin's middle name suggests a relationship between John King, husband of Susanna Whalen, and William King, husband of Maria Snelgrove Johnson. It is likely William King, widower of Susanna Wheadon, married Maria Snelgrove Johnson. There is no known use of Snelgrove as a middle name and no ancestor surnamed Snelgrove in the known ancestors of Thomas Pike King and Emily Julia Pike. William King, husband of Susanna Wheadon, is the son of John King and Ann Pike? of Bradley's Cove. Thus, Thomas Pike King, husband of Emily Julia Pike, is William King's brother and the uncle of William King and Susanna Wheadon's son John Thomas. This relationship may explain why Thomas King was a witness at the marriage of John King and Susanna Whelan. Newfoundland's Grand Banks records a transcript of Catalina Methodist burials which include the burial of John King age 37 on April 14 1882, implying he was born about 1844. The transcript of the Catalina Methodist burials continues until June 1936 and does not record the burial of another John King. As John King and Susanna Whelan had no children after 1879 and there is no evidence of the burial of another John King in Catalina or Little Catalina after 1882, John King age 37 buried 1882 may be the husband of Susanna Whelan. If so, John King, husband of Susanna Whelan, was born about 1844. FamilySearch's Newfoundland Vital Statistics, 1753-1893 has one baptism of a John (or variant spelling) King in Catalina or Little Catalina between 1839 and 1849; namely Jonathan, son of John and Mary King born June 9 1844 in Catalina. But, John and Mary King had later children (i.e. Jane in 1846, Peter in 1848, and Mary Jane in 1853) born in Greenspond indicating they left Catalina. So, on balance, it is likely John King, husband of Susanna Whelan, is John Thomas, son of William King and Susanna Wheadon of Bradley's Cove. It is also likely the Catalina Methodist burial of John King age 37 in 1882 was for John Thomas King, husband of Susanna Whelan. | KING, John Thomas (I5187)

| Who is Elizabeth Goodger buried September 16 1827 age 7 days "of this parish" at Harbour Grace Church of England? Elizabeth could be the daughter of John and Elizabeth or of Richard and Patience. James and Susanna reside in Bryant’s Cove in 1827, and so are unlikely to be Elizabeth's parents. The name Elizabeth suggests John and Elizabeth, and there is a 4 ½ year gap between the births of their children Edward (born April 1825) and Prudence (born September 1829). Elizabeth Whelan's parents may be Thomas and Elizabeth Whelan. If so, it is reasonable that John and Elizabeth would name their first born daughter Elizabeth. Also, I believe Thomas buried December 16 1827 age 1 year "of this parish" to be the son of Richard and Patience. It seems a little unlikely Richard and Patience would have a son (Thomas) born sometime in 1826, and then a daughter born in September 1827. Thus, it is reasonable to believe Elizabeth Goodger buried September 16 1827 age 7 days is the daughter of John Gudger and Elizabeth Whelan. Elizabeth probably died before John Gudger and Elizabeth Whelan could have her baptized. | GUDGER, Elizabeth (I3576)

| Who is the father of brothers John Pike, testator of the Will dated July 24 1836, and Samuel Pike, his beneficiary and Executor? FamilySearch’s Newfoundland Supreme Court Estate Files 1824-1930 includes the estate of John Pike of Mosquito in 1837 (Film 2056588 DGS 8301611 Images 729-737 of 1154). The Will is dated July 24 1836 and bequeaths "to my brother Samuel Pike and to my nephew John Pike son of Samuel" and to "Thomas Pike my brother". The Will appoints "Wm Taylor Senr of Carbonear and Samuel Pike my Brother Executors". A Petition to the court dated September 17 1836 from the Executors named in the Will asks to be appointed as Executors. This Petition states "John Pike left no widow nor children him surviving and the next of kin an (sic) Samuel Pike a Brother one of your Petitioners and a half Brother Thomas Pike". The testator John Pike has a half brother Thomas Pike. As they are both surnamed Pike, it is more likely the mother of the older of John and Thomas died, and their father remarried. But, it is also possible their father died, and their widowed mother remarried another Pike. The Rooms Provincial Archives has a collection of Newfoundland Voters Lists. Images of some of these Voters Lists are available at the Family History Society of Newfoundland and Labrador (FHSNL). The 1835 Voters Lists for Carbonear, Clowns Cove, and Mosquito (FHSNL GN 43/7 Voters Lists: Box 7 - Conception Bay (Spaniard's Bay to Lower Island Cove) - 1835) record the following Thomas Pike’s (Images 36-37 of 77): 1. Thomas Pike of Timothy Carbonear South Side 2. Thomas Pike of Thomas Carbonear South Side 3. Thomas Pike of John Carbonear Riverhead The 1835 Voters Lists for Carbonear, Clowns Cove, and Mosquito (FHSNL GN 43/7 Voters Lists: Box 7 - Conception Bay (Spaniard's Bay to Lower Island Cove) - 1835) record the following Samuel Pike’s (Images 36-37 of 77): 1. Samuel Pike of Thomas Carbonear South Side 2. Samuel Pike of John Carbonear Riverhead 3. Samuel Pike Clowns Cove 4. Samuel Pike Mosquito Samuel Pike, husband of Elizabeth unknown, is recorded as a Planter at the baptisms of his two known children - John (in 1817) and Julia (in 1827). It is reasonable to believe he is in the 1835 Voters Lists. A John Pike is recorded in the 1835 Voters List for Mosquito; his father is not named (Image 45 of 77). The 1835 Voters Lists for Carbonear, Clowns Cove, and Mosquito record the following as "of Thomas" Pike (Images 36-37 of 77): 1. Samuel Pike of Thomas Carbonear South Side 2. Thomas Pike of Thomas Carbonear South Side 3. Francis Pike of Thomas Carbonear South Side 4. William Pike of Thomas Carbonear South Side 5. Francis Pike of Thomas Carbonear Riverhead John Pike, testator of the 1836 Will, was born about 1769. His father was likely born before about 1750, and was at least 85 years old at the time of the 1835 Voters List. Father Thomas Pike may not be in the 1835 Voters Lists. See Notes for Samuel Pike, husband of Elizabeth unknown, documenting why it is reasonable to believe Samuel Pike, husband of Elizabeth unknown, is the brother of John Pike, testator of the 1836 Will. Who is Thomas Pike, father of brothers John Pike, testator of the Will dated July 24 1836, and Samuel Pike, John Pike's beneficiary and Executor? The known candidates are: 1. Thomas Pike age 100 of Carbonear buried February 25 1835 at Carbonear Methodist David Pike's Family History & Genealogy Resources website records this burial. The Gertrude Crosbie Collection of Births, Deaths and Marriages in Newfoundland Newspapers records "DIED.--On Sunday last, Mr. Thomas Pike, aged 101 years" from the Star and Conception Bay Journal. His date of death is recorded as February 22 1835. Certainly, this is the Thomas Pike buried February 25 1835 at Carbonear Methodist. It is also reasonable to conclude this Thomas Pike is the first Thomas Pike of Carbonear South Side in Claudius Watts' letter described as follows: "… there was an old man Thomas Pike who lived at the south side of Carbonear and attained a great age: a most remarkable man. I once made a point of paying him a visit. I found him sitting outside his door facing south - the sun was shining brightly - he was getting the full benefit of it and highly enjoyed it as he been confined to his bed for several months from severe sickness. His bodily frame was fine - his head was superb like a piece of polished marble - not a hair on it. His memory was good. He told me a good deal about his early adventures and exploits: and about many of the first settlers in Carbonear, the adjacent coves, and of his going with others to live on Carbonear Island - their guns & fortifications to resist the attacks of the French & their Indian allies, &c which they much dreaded. He had made several voyages to Spain & Portugal in fish laden vessels in his early years, &c. I have an idea that this very aged man - Thomas Pike was the brother of the father of Francis Pike, Senr. of my grandfather, Wm. Pike _____ (7) Pike of Mosquito and of Catherine Pike - the wife of Wm. Taylor Senr - south side Carbonear: and if so - that branch of the Pike family resided in Carbonear many years anterior to the advent of John Pike there - that you start with as the progenitor of the Pike family in Carbonear. Be that as it my [sic] - they were all originally from Poole, England." 2. Thomas Pike age 90 died before the July 3 1833 edition of the Star and Conception Bay Journal Gertrude Crosbie's Births, Deaths and Marriages in Newfoundland Newspapers records the death of Thomas Pike age 90 who died before the July 3 1833 edition of the Star and Conception Bay Journal with the comment "Died in this town". There is no burial record for Thomas Pike age about 90 in 1833 at Carbonear Methodist, Carbonear Church of England, or Harbour Grace Church of England. There is a burial for John Pike age 89 on July 4 1833 at Carbonear Methodist, but no tombstone for a Thomas Pike or a John Pike who died in 1833. It is not clear if there were two burials or only one, and, if one, whether the deceased was named Thomas or John. The Newfoundland Ancestor periodical published by the then Newfoundland and Labrador Genealogical Society in Summer 2001 (Volume 17, 3 Pages 158-159) has an article of material presented by Gilbert Pike on October 26 1999 about Pike Families in Carbonear before 1800. This material includes the marriage and children for the following Thomas Pike's: 1. Thomas Pike and Jane Powell married 1783 in Harbour Grace Church of England. FamilySearch's Newfoundland, Vital Statistics, 1753-1893 does not record this marriage. Keith Matthews Name Files records: 1783 Harbour Grace Church Thomas Pike married Jane Howel. David Pike's Family History & Genealogy Resources website records the Harbour Grace Church of England marriage of Thomas Pike and Jane Howel on November 8 1783. Gilbert Pike does not identify any children of Thomas and Jane Pike. It seems more likely Thomas Pike's wife is surnamed Howell, not Powell. 2. Thomas Pike and Charlotte Garland married 1789 in Harbour Grace Church of England. FamilySearch's Newfoundland, Vital Statistics, 1753-1893 records this marriage on September 26 1789. Thomas Pike's occupation is recorded as Captain. Keith Matthews Name Files record: 1789 Harbour Grace Church Captain Thomas Pike married Miss Ann Garland. David Pike's Family History & Genealogy Resources website records the Harbour Grace Church of England marriage of Captain Thomas Pike and Miss Charlote Garland on September 26 1789. Gilbert Pike identifies the following children of Thomas and Charlotte Pike: Elizabeth Matilda Green (1791), Thomas Graves (1794), and Edward Frederick (1804). 3. Thomas and Mary Pike baptize the following children: Samuel (1776) and Moses (1779). No marriage is provided in Gilbert Pike's material. David Pike's Family History & Genealogy Resources website records the burial of Mary Pike, wife of Thomas Pike of Carbonear, on December 22 1781 at Harbour Grace Church of England. No age is recorded. It is possible this Thomas and Mary Pike are the parents of brothers John Pike, testator of the Will dated July 24 1836, and Samuel Pike, his beneficiary and Executor. Following Mary Pike's burial on December 22 1781, her husband Thomas Pike may have married Jane Howell or Charlotte Garland. Thomas Pike and Charlotte Garland's son Thomas Graves Pike is born July 6 1793 in Carbonear. He is not mentioned in the Will of his grandfather Charles Garland dated February 2 1810 (although other grandchildren, including his brother Edward, receive bequests). This likely indicates Thomas Graves Pike died before Charles Garland’s Will. See Notes for Thomas Graves Pike born July 6 1793 for further information. | PIKE, Thomas (I6216)

| Who was Mary Goodger, spinster of Harbour Grace, who married William Adams, bachelor of Harbour Grace, in March 1841 at Harbour Grace Church of England? The witnesses were Joseph Courage and James Nichels(?). William Adams of Harbour Grace died January 19 1849, but his age is not recorded in his burial record. Mary Adams, widow of Harbour Grace, married James Higgins, bachelor of Harbour Grace, October 7 1851 in Harbour Grace. The witnesses were George Sheppard and Frances Dear. Was Mary Adams who married James Higgins the Mary Goodger who had married William Adams in March 1841? Possible candidates for Mary Gudger are: 1. Mary, daughter of Richard Gudger and Patience, born August 16 1814 Harbour Grace 2. Mary, daughter of James Gudger and Susanna French, born June 10 1821 Bryant’s Cove William and Mary Adams had daughter Elizabeth (born February 4 1842), son Richard Henry (born January 27 1844), and son William (born May 24 1846). There were no further children of William and Mary Adams baptized at Harbour Grace Church of England. James and Mary Higgins had daughters Emma Jane (baptized June 3 1855) and Patience Maria (baptized August 8 1858). There were no further children of James and Mary Higgins baptized at Harbour Grace Church of England. The available Harbour Grace Church of England records support the conclusion that Mary Adams, widow of Harbour Grace, who married James Higgins was Mary Goodger who had married William Adams. 1. William, last known child of William and Mary Adams, was born May 24 1846 in Harbour Grace. 2. William Adams of Harbour Grace died January 19 1849 in Harbour Grace. 3. No further children of William and Mary Adams were baptized at Harbour Grace Church of England after 1849. 4. Mary Adams, widow of Harbour Grace, married James Higgins October 7 1851 at Harbour Grace. 5. The only other Harbour Grace Church of England burial for a William Adams of Harbour Grace occurred May 1 1861. This William Adams was 15 years old, implying he was born about 1845 to 1846. Obviously, he was not the husband of Mary Goodger. He is most likely the son of William and Mary Adams who was born May 24 1846. So, it is reasonable to conclude it was Mary Goodger who was the Mary Adams, widow, who married James Higgins October 7 1851 at Harbour Grace. There is evidence that at least some children of Mary (Goodger) Adams/Higgins remained in Harbour Grace. 1. Elizabeth Adams, spinster of Harbour Grace married Tobias Shepherd, bachelor of Harbour Grace, December 19 1867 at Harbour Grace. The witnesses were George Shephard and Rose Ann Noel. Tobias and Elizabeth Shepherd had the following children baptized in Harbour Grace: Albert (baptized November 25 1868), Eldred (baptized March 30 1870), and Elkanah (baptized July 30 1871). There were no further children of Tobias and Elizabeth Shepherd baptized at Harbour Grace Church of England. 2. The Stonepics Index has an entry for "Sheppard, Tobias (1905) & Albert" in Harbour Grace South Side (i.e. located on NF126 HAG13). The combination of Tobias and Albert indicates this entry is likely for Tobias, husband of Elizabeth Adams, and their son Albert. The Death Registration for Tobias Sheppard records his death on November 14 1905 in Harbour Grace at age 64. He was born and buried in Harbour Grace South. Tobias' age of 64 implies a year of birth about 1841 which is consistent with the birth of Isaac Tobias, son of John and Maria Shephard of Harbour Grace, on February 11 1842. 3. Patience Maria Higgins, spinster of Harbour Grace, married Moses Shepherd, bachelor of Harbour Grace, on August 27 1871 at Harbour Grace. The witnesses were Henry (Gosse or Jones?) & (Theresa?) Gosse. Moses and Patience Shepherd had the following child baptized in Harbour Grace: Abijah (baptized June 23 1872). 4. Jacob Adams, bachelor of Harbour Grace married Caroline Weeks, of Harbour Grace, May 31 1878 at Harbour Grace. One witness was Emma Jane Higgins (daughter of James and Mary Higgins). So, it seems reasonable to conclude that Mary (Goodger) Adams/Higgins remained in Harbour Grace. There is a burial for Mary Higgins April 21 1890 age 76 of Harbour Grace South Side at Harbour Grace St. Peter's Church of England. The Harbour Grace Church of England only records baptisms for one mother named Mary Higgins; namely daughters Emma Jane and Patience Maria of James and Mary Higgins. There are no Mary Higgins, but three Mary Anne Higgins, baptized at Harbour Grace Church of England up to and including 1827. These three Mary Anne Higgins were born between 1818 and 1821, and could be the Mary Higgins buried in 1890 (assuming she was unmarried). There are the following marriages at Harbour Grace Church of England for: 1. Mary Higgins, spinster, and Nathaniel Sheppard on December 26 1839 2. Mary Ann Higgins and James Bray on January 17 1842 Mary Ann Higgins witnessed the marriage of Frederick James Dancey and Mary Ann Whiting on September 28 1844. This is after the dates of the above marriages in 1839 and 1842. But, there is a burial for Mary-Ann Higgins on March 30 1845 age 25 of Harbour Grace who may be this Mary Ann Higgins. So, of the three Mary Anne Higgins baptized at Harbour Grace Church of England up to and including 1827, two may have married and one may have died in 1845. So, the Mary Higgins who died in 1890 may have been a widow. If so, she was very likely the widow of James Higgins. The first Gudger baptism at St. Stephens Church of England, Greenspond occurs August 14 1832 (for Richard, son of John and Elizabeth Goodens). The last Gudger event for John Gudger and Elizabeth Whelan of Harbour Grace South Side is the baptism of their daughter Prudence on October 2 1829 at Harbour Grace Church of England. So, John Gudger and Elizabeth Whelan of Harbour Grace South Side left Harbour Grace sometime after October 1829, and arrived at Cat Harbour sometime before September 1831 (as son Richard's place of birth is recorded as Cat Harbour). I have previously concluded James Gudger in the 1836 Census of Cat Harbour is the husband of Susanna French. See Notes for James Gudger, husband of Susanna French, for more detail. It is reasonable to conclude John Gudger and James Gudger travelled at the same time from Harbour Grace to Cat Harbour (based on the letter from Thomas H. Goodyear dated March 19 1995 and the Known History of the Goodyear Family Presently Living at Grand Falls written by Josiah Goodyear in 1964 or 1965). It is difficult to believe James Gudger left his daughter Mary in Harbour Grace when he moved to Cat Harbour as Mary was less than 10 years old when the move occurred. However, James' daughters Sarah (baptized January 3 1814) and Susanna (born September 24 1816) were older and may have been able to obtain employment. In the 1836 Census of Cat Harbour, James Gudger's family consists of 1 Female 14 to 60 and no other Females. As James' wife Susanna died in 1829, this Female is likely one of his daughters Sarah, Susanna, or Mary; or perhaps a second wife if James re-married. The burial for Mary Higgins on April 21 1890 age 76 of Harbour Grace South Side implies this Mary was born about 1813 to 1814. This is consistent with the birth of Mary, daughter of Richard Gudger and Patience, on August 16 1814. | GUDGER, Mary (I3520)

| William Gardener buried November 19, 1830 at age 63 in St. Mary's, Luton was born about 1767. There is no tombstone for this William Gardner at St. Mary's. This William Gardener's approximate year of birth is consistent with the baptism of William, son of John and Elizabeth Gardner/Garner, on January 15, 1768 in St. Mary's, Luton. So, William, son of John and Elizabeth Gardner/Garner, is a candidate to be William Gardner, husband of Sarah unknown. John and Elizabeth Gardner reside in Luton for a long period of time based on events at St. Mary's. These include the baptisms of their six known children from 1768 to 1779; the burial of Elizabeth, wife of John Gardner, in 1786; the marriage of John Gardner to Jane Stephens/Stevens in 1790; the burial of Sarah, daughter of William and Sarah Gardner, in 1797; and the burial of Jane, wife of John Gardner Senior, in 1805. As well, there is a burial for John Gardener in 1816 at age 78 at St. Mary's, implying an approximate year of birth about 1737 to 1738. John Gardner's approximate year of birth is consistent with the birth of the six known children of John and Elizabeth Gardner, from 1768 to 1779; and the approximate year of birth of 1745 for John Gardner's second wife Jane Stephens/Stevens who was buried in January 1805 at age 59. So, it is likely the John Gardener buried in 1816 at age 78 is the husband of Elizabeth and of Jane Stephens/Stevens. With this indication John Gardner resided in Luton during all of his adult years, it is reasonable to believe at least some of his children remained in Luton. It is then reasonable to believe his son William remained in Luton as there is a burial for a William Gardner which is consistent with the baptism of William, son of John and Elizabeth Gardner. It is preferable to have further supporting evidence. FamilySearch's Bedfordshire Parish Registers, 1538-1983 does not record the baptism of a John Gard[e/i]ner between 1730 and 1750. FamilySearch's England Births and Christenings, 1538-1975 record many baptisms of a John Gard[e/i]ner between 1730 and 1750 with 4 in Bedfordshire: 1. John, son of Henry and Sarah Gardiner, baptized September 12 1742 in Caddington 2. John, son of William and Susan Gardiner, born August 14 1746 in Kempston 3. John, son of John and Mary Gardiner, baptized December 20 1747 in Elstow 4. John, son of John and Ann Gardner, baptized October 4 1749 in Kempston Luton is 3 km northeast of Caddington, 16 km south of Elstow, and 27 km south of Kempston. The Caddington John Gard[e/i]ner is closest in age and location, but about 5 years too young. John and Elizabeth Gardner had no sons named Henry, but their second daughter is named Sarah. | GARDNER, John (I5160)

| William Gardner's Monument Inscription in St. Mary's Church, Luton states: Sacred to the Memory of WILLIAM GARDNER, who departed this life August 23rd, 1847, aged 58 years. Also near this place lie seven of his children. A description of the Luton Union Workhouse from The Workhouse website located at http://www.workhouses.org.uk/Luton/ states: The composition of the new Luton Poor Law Union was the subject of intensive lobbying by one of the principal landowners in the area, the Marquis of Bute. Like many large landowners, Lord Bute was keen for his estates to fall within a single moderately-sized union, so as to maximise his influence on the new Board of Guardians. The new Luton union was officially formed on 16th April 1835. Its operation was overseen by an elected Board of Guardians, 21 in number, representing its 15 constituent parishes as listed below (figures in brackets indicate numbers of Guardians if more than one): County of Bedford: Barton in the Clay, Caddington — part of, Dunstable (2), Eaton Bray (until 1845), Houghton Regis (2), Humbershoe, Luton (5), Streatley with Sharpenhoe, Studham - part of, Sundon, Totternhoe, Whipsnade. County of Hertford: Caddington - part of (2), Kensworth, Studham - part of. Later Additions (all from 1896): Hyde, Leagrave, Limbury, Stopsley,. The population falling within the Union at the 1831 census had been 15,483 with parishes ranging in size from from Whipsnade (population 204) to Luton itself (5,683). The average annual poor-rate expenditure for the period 1831-34 had been £9,016 or 11s.8d. per head of the population. At its first meeting, the Board elected the Marquis of Bute as its Chairman. Lord Bute donated a piece of land on which to erect a new workhouse at the west side of Dunstable Road. The Poor Law Commissioners authorised an expenditure of £4,655 on construction of the building which opened in 1836 and was to accommodate up to 300 inmates. The building, designed by John Williams, had an unusual plan which combined elements of two other popular layouts - Sampson Kempthorne's square plan and the courtyard plan devised by Sir Francis Head. The original structure had a courtyard-style outer perimeter of two-storeyed accommodation ranges, rooms in the upper storey being accessed by cast-iron galleries attached to the inner sides. The centre of entrance block on Dunstable Road formed the eastern side of a quadrangle and contained the Guardians' board room, offices etc. Males were accommodated at the north side of the workhouse, and females at the south. | GARDNER, William (I2126)

| William Pate and Agnes Coats named their first known son Thomas, their second known son James, and their third known son William. It was common practice to name the first son after the father's father, the second son after the mother's father, and the third son after the father. Certainly, the third son is named after his father. William Pate and Agnes Coats named their first known daughter Elizabeth and their second known daughter Anne. Similarly, It was common practice to name the first daughter after the mother's mother, and the second daughter after the father's mother. Agnes Coats' father was named James and her mother was named Elizabeth which both follow the naming practice described above. So, it is possible William Pate's father was named Thomas and his mother was named Anne. ScotlandsPeople Old Parish Registers Church of Scotland record of the marriage of William Peat and Agnes Coats states they are "both of Johnstone and this parish". This suggests William Peat was born in Johnstone. The year of birth for William Pate, husband of Agnes Coats, is not known. ScotlandsPeople Old Parish Registers Church of Scotland records the baptism of only one William Pate in Renfrewshire. He is William, son of Thomas Pate and Ann Walker, born May 26, 1801 in Abbey (Paisley). ScotlandsPeople Old Parish Registers Church of Scotland records the baptism of Ann, daughter of Thomas Pate and Ann Walker, born February 11 1788 in Abbey (Paisley); identifying her as William's sister. ScotlandsPeople Old Parish Registers Church of Scotland records the marriage of Ann Peat "of this parish" and Denis Kennedy of Lochwinoch on January 15 1813 at Abbey (Paisley). ScotlandsPeople Statutory Registers records the Death Registration for Ann Kennedy age 71, wife of Dennis Kennedy and daughter of Thomas Peat and Ann Walker, on January 9 1861 in Lochwinnoch, Renfrew. This confirms Ann Peat who married Denis Kennedy in 1813 at Abbey (Paisley) was the daughter of Thomas Pate and Ann Walker. It seems reasonable to believe William Pate, husband of Agnes Coats, is the son of Thomas Pate and Ann Walker as: 1. The names of the children of William Pate and Agnes Coats suggest William's parents are named Thomas and Ann. 2. There is a William Pate born 1801 in Abbey (Paisley) who is thus of an age consistent with marrying Agnes Coats in 1824. This William is the son of Thomas Pate and Ann Walker. 3. The marriage of William Pate and Agnes Coats states they are "both of Johnstone and this parish". There is only one known William Pate born in Abbey (Paisley) who could marry Agnes Coats; he is the son of Thomas Pate and Ann Walker. 4. William Pate's sister Ann Pate's marriage in Abbey (Paisley) in 1813 states she is "of this parish", indicating at least some of the family remained in Abbey (Paisley) until at least 1813. | PATE, William (I5285)
