The 1838 Census records Peter Devaux [and] Colmbe (sic) occupation Fisherman with 3 Males under 6, 1 Male 6-14, and 1 Female over 14. It is reasonable to believe the 3 Males under 6 are sons Peter, Charles, and Simon; the 1 Male 6-14 is son Edward; and the 1 Female 6-14 is daughter Sabine. I do not know the identity of the 1 Female over 14.
Thus, it is reasonable to believe Simon, son of Pierre deVaux and Colombe Landry, was born about 1832 to 1838. Both the 1871 and 1881 Censuses seem inaccurate. The 1891 to 1921 Censuses consistently imply a year of birth about 1834 to 1836. Simon's next youngest sibling is Colombe born April 3 1839, and so it is unlikely Simon was born in 1838.
It seems more reasonable to believe Simon Devoe was born in the about 4 years between brothers Peter and Charles rather than in the about 3 years between Charles and Colombe. So, it seems reasonable to believe Simon Devoe was born about 1834.
