Notes - The 1861 Census of Sydney Mines, Cape Breton County (Polling District 4 Abstract 6 Family 10) records Colombe Landry as age 50-60, implying a year of birth about 1800-1810. There is no other known record of her age. See Notes for Pierre deVaux, husband of Colombe Landry, for a full transcription of this Census entry.
The Devoe-deVaux Family History 1691-1991 (Page 48) identifies Sabine Devoe as the first child of Pierre deVaux and Colombe Landry. Sabine Devoe married André Dugas on January 11 1841 in River Bourgeois. According to the Devoe-deVaux Family History 1691-1991 (Page 48), Sabine Devoe is recorded as "fille majeure" at this marriage indicating she was 21 or older. Author John Brooks Devoe discounts this as evidence of Sabine Devoe's approximate year of birth in favour of the 1838 and 1871 Censuses. He states Sabine Devoe is under 14 in the 1838 Census and age 44 in the 1871 Census leading to his conclusion Sabine Devoe was born about 1825, and was 16 at the time of her marriage.
The 1838 Census of Grand Digue to River Inhabitants records Peter Devaux [and] Colmbe (sic) with 1 Female 6-14 and 1 Female over 14. See Notes for Pierre deVaux, husband of Colombe Landry, for a full transcription of this Census entry.
Either the Female 6-14 or the Female over 14 is daughter Sabine. I do not know the identity of the other Female. She may be a daughter who is as yet unidentified, a more distant relation, or a servant. John Brooks Devoe's conclusion Sabine Devoe is under 14 in the 1838 Census may not be correct.
The 1871 Census of Howley's Ferry, Cape Breton County, Nova Scotia records Andrew Deguau (sic) age 60 Fisherman, wife Sabine age 44, Poline age 24, John age 21, A James age 15 Fisherman, Columbine (sic) (male) age 12, Mary age 9, and Joseph age 3; all born NS (Division 2 Page 20-21 Family 67).
The 1881 Census of Boularderie records Andrew Degauh (sic) age 63 Fisherman, wife Sebina age 49, Mary age 17, and Matthias age 12; all born NS (Page 36 Family 151).
The 1891 Census of Boularderie records Andrew Degaux age 72 Fishing, wife Easebin (sic) age 58, son Joseph age 25 Fishing, daughter in law Janie age 23, and grandson Eddison age 1; all born NS (Page 25-26 Family 101).
So, Sabine Devoe's ages are recorded as follows in the Censuses:
1871 Census age 44, implying a year of birth about 1826-1827
1881 Census age 49, implying a year of birth about 1831-1832
1891 Census age 58, implying a year of birth about 1832-1833
As Sabine Devoe married in January 1841, her ages in the 1881 and 1891 Censuses are clearly incorrect. Her age in the 1871 Census implies she was married at age 14 which is unlikely. None of the 1871 to 1891 Censuses provide an age implying a likely year of birth.
Perhaps, Sabine Devoe was a "fille majeure" at her marriage in January 1841 implying a year of birth in or before 1819. This then implies Pierre deVaux and Colombe Landry married in or before 1818. If Colombe Landry was age 50-60 in the 1861 Census, then she was likely born in the very early 1800s.
