Notes - La Société Historique Acadienne Cahier Vol 23 No 1 1992 Janvier-Mars contains Stephen A. White's article "Les fondateurs de la paroisse d'Arichat, Cap-Breton" briefly describing each of the 70 heads of families who signed a March 8 1786 letter to J.F.W. DesBarres, Lieutenant Governor of Cape Breton. This letter thanked J.F.W. DesBarres for the promise of land concessions, the permission to construct a church and school, and the request for tax exemptions. Following is an English translation of Stephen A. White's description by Lena Samson.
Joseph Deveau, son of Charlemagne dit Charles Deveau and Marie Gaudet, born at Tantamarre about 1749, married (#1) about 1772, to Scholastique Landry, daughter of Jean Baptiste Landry and Marie Josèphe LeBlanc, and (2) , in 1794, to an unidentified woman. Joseph Deveau settled at Grand Digue (Poulamond), where he still lived during the Cape Breton Militia census of 1813. He was a fisherman. As well as the Deveau's of Richmond County, the Deveau's of Little Bras d'Or are his descendants.
The 1811 Census of Grand Digue (now Poulamon) records Joseph De Veaux Yeoman with 2 Males 14 to 60, 1 Female 14 to 60, 1 Male under 14, 1 Male or Female over 60, and 3 Unmarried Males and Females.
The 1813 Militia Roll for D'Escousse and Grand Digue records the following Deveau's in Grand Digue:
1. Joseph Deveau age 64 born Nova Scotia Fisherman with 1 Woman, 1 Boy, and no Girls
2. Joseph Deveau Jr age 24 born Cape Breton Mariner with no Women, Boys, or Girls
3. Simon Deveau age 18 born Cape Breton Mariner with no Women, Boys, or Girls
The 1 Male under 14 in the 1811 Census, and the 1 Boy in the 1813 Militia Roll is Pierre deVaux, son of Joseph deVaux and Anne LeBlanc.
The 1838 Census of D'Escousse records Joseph Deveaux Widow (sic) Fisherman with 1 Male over 14. The Male over 14 may be a grandson as Joseph deVaux's three sons are married.
