12. Marriage of Eliza Pavitt and Charles Taylor on July 20, 1842 at Saint Marylebone Parish Church, Marylebone, Middlesex, England. Eliza gives her father's name as James Pavitt and his profession as Baker. The witnesses are William Taylor and Sarah Spring.
13. Marriage of James Pavitt and Rose Hannah Staners on June 3, 1849 at Saint James, Clerkenwell, Middlesex. James Pavitt is of full age, a Butcher, and his residence is Halton Street. James gives his father's name as James Pavitt and his profession as Butcher. The witnesses are Charles Taylor and Eliza Taylor, helping to confirm James Pavitt and Eliza (Pavitt) Taylor are brother and sister.
14. The 1851 Census of Wisbech, Cambridgeshire records James Pevitt age 58 Ag[rarian] Lab[ourer] born Hertford Codicote and Mary Pevitt age 53 born Cambridge Foulmore. The name, age, and place of birth for James Pevitt seems to uniquely identify him as James, son of James Pavitt and Bett Lawrence. But, I have no explanation for his occupation of Agrarian Labourer. Mary Pevitt's age is consistent with that of Mary Godfrey. There is a Mary, daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Godfrey, who is baptized May 2 1798 in Foulmore.
15. The 1861 Census of Luton, Bedfordshire records James Pavitt Head Widower age 68 Gardener born Hertford Codicote and William Gardner Grandson age 11 Scholar born Bedford Luton. There is a William Gardner baptized at Saint Mary, Luton on October 6, 1850. William's parents are Robert Gardner and Ann Pavitt (who is James Pavitt's daughter). James Pavitt's age is 68 implying a year of birth about 1792-1793, and his place of birth is given as Codicote, Hertford.
James Pavitt, husband of Mary and father of James Pavitt, has a profession of Butcher in the 1841 Census. James Pavitt, father of James Pavitt who marries Rose Hannah Staners, has a profession of Butcher in the Marriage Registration for James Pavitt and Rose Hannah Staners in 1849.
James Pavitt, husband of Mary Ellerd, was widowed upon Mary Ellerd's death in 1830. James Pavitt who married Mary Godfrey in October 1837 is a Widower.
Robert Dawson and Ann Pavitt are witnesses at the marriage of James Pavitt and Mary Godfrey in October 1837. James Pavitt and Mary Ellerd have a daughter Ann born about 1819 who marries Robert Gardner in 1841. The witness Ann Pavitt is most likely the daughter of James Pavitt and Mary Ellerd.
Robert Dawson and Ann Pavitt are also the witnesses at the marriage of Amelia Pavitt and James Gardner in May 1837 at Saint Mary, Whitechapel. This is further support for James Pavitt being Amelia Pavitt's father.
Amelia Pavitt, daughter of James Pavitt and Mary Ellerd, marries James Gardner in May 1837 at Saint Mary, Whitechapel. James Pavitt and Mary Godfrey also marry at Saint Mary, Whitechapel on October 12 1837. With so many churches in Middlesex and London, it is difficult to believe this was just a coincidence.
James Pavitt, his wife Mary (Godfrey), and son James reside in Islington, Finsbury for 1841 Census. This is also where James Gardner and Amelia Pavitt, and Charles Taylor and Eliza Pavitt reside in the 1841 Census.
At his marriage to Mary Godfrey in 1837, James Pavitt gives his profession as Gentlemans Steward. James Pavitt may still be living off funds Mary Ellerd received from her father William's estate, perhaps James Pavitt was receiving funds for his son James upbringing, or perhaps James Pavitt had his own funds. But, it's possible James Pavitt stretched the definition of Gentlemans Steward to apply to him.

The profession of Gentlemans Steward in 1837 seems inconsistent. James Pavitt's daughters Ann and Eliza gave James profession as Miller and as Baker respectively at their marriages in 1841 and 1842. But, having the same witnesses (Robert Dawson and Ann Pavitt) and the same church for both James and his daughter Amelia's marriages overrides the concern about James' varying professions.
All 18 families containing a James and Mary with a Pavitt or variant surname (i.e. beginning with Pav) in the 1841 Census were reviewed. Most (e.g. Labourers, Shoe Makers, Coal Meter, and Warfinger) could be eliminated, and the Census records for almost all others were examined. The only likely family was James (Butcher), Mary, and James in Islington.
So, despite the inconsistencies in James Pavitt's profession, it is reasonable to conclude the James Pavitt in the 1841 Census of James (Butcher), Mary, and James in Islington; and who married Mary Godfrey on October 12, 1837 at Saint Mary, Whitechapel, Middlesex is the husband of Mary Ellerd and the father of Emma, Amelia, Ann, Eliza, Ellen, William, and James.
The 1851 Census of St. Peters, Wisbech, Cambridge, England records James Devitt Head 58 Ag Lab born Herts Codicote and wife Mary Devitt Wife 53 born Cambridge Foulmore. There are no children with James and Mary.
It is clear from a review of original Census page that James' surname in this Census is Pevitt, not Devitt. The first letter of James' surname is similar to the P in St. Peters rather than the D in Ditto & Daug[hter] on the Census page.
James Pevitt's occupation of Agricultural Labourer is unexpected but his name, age, and parish of birth are consistent with James Pavitt, husband of Mary Ellerd and father of Amelia Pavitt. Mary Pevitt's age of 53 is consistent with Mary (Godfrey) Pavitt's age of 43 in the 1841 Census and her age at death in March 1860 of 62. Mary Pevitt's place of birth is recorded as Foulmore Cambridge. FamilySearch's England, Births and Christenings, 1538-1975 records the baptism of Mary Godfrey on May 2 1798 in Fowlmere Cambridge, daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth. Mary (Godfrey) Pavitt's father is known to be Thomas from her marriage to James Pavitt.
James Pavitt's son James gave his place of birth as Foulmore Cambridge in the 1851 Census. As well, Mary (Ellerd) Pavitt's burial at St. Mary's Parish, Luton records her abode as Foulmier BKM (BKM is Buckinghamshire).
Although James Pevitt's occupation of Agricultural Labourer is unexpected, other facts support the conclusion this Census entry is for James Pavitt, husband of Mary Ellerd and Mary Godfrey.
