- Catherine (King) (Weaver) Smith's Death Registration records her age as 41 implying a year of birth about 1803-1804. Catherine dies before the 1851 Census, and so only her county of birth (Lancashire) is known. Catherine's record of marriage to William Smith does not record her father's name, and the witnesses do not include a King.
FamilySearch's England Births and Christenings, 1538-1975 records the baptism of Catharine King (born May 1804) on June 3, 1804 at Saint John, Preston, Lancashire. Her parents are John and Ann King. This baptism is consistent with Catherine (King) (Weaver) Smith's implied year of birth.
Ancestry's Lancashire, England, Marriages and Banns, 1754-1936 records the marriage of Thomas Weever Bachelor of this Parish and Catherine King Spinster of this Parish on November 15, 1824 at Saint John, Preston. Both Thomas and Catherine made their mark. The witnesses were James Parkinton and Margaret Olaves. No other information is recorded.
Ancestry's Lancashire, England, Births and Baptisms, 1813-1911 records baptisms for only three children of a Catherine Weaver in Preston between 1824 and 1844 in Preston.
1. Hannah baptized June 30 1826, daughter of Thomas (Grinder) and Catherine Weaver of Spitals Moss, Bolton St.
2. Mary Ann baptized June 17 1827, daughter of Thomas (Mechanic) and Catherine Weaver of Bolton St.
3. Martha baptized March 16 1841, daughter of Catherine Weaver of Singleton Row.
Catherine Weaver is recorded as a Widow at her marriage to William Smith in 1836. It is difficult to be certain this Thomas Weaver is Catherine King's first husband, and that Hannah and Mary Ann are Catherine King's children.
Neither Hannah Weaver nor Mary Ann Weaver reside with Catherine King, wife of William Smith, in the 1841 Census of Preston. Ancestry's Lancashire, England, Deaths and Burials, 1813-1986 records the burial of Hannah Weaver on July 23 1826 at St. John's Church of England, Preston. Hannah Weaver is recorded as an Infant and her residence as Bolton St., identifying her as the daughter of Thomas and Catherine. Catherine King's first child with William Smith is named Mary Ann, suggesting Catherine King's earlier daughter Mary Ann died.
With no other known candidates in Preston, it is reasonable to believe Catherine King, widow of Thomas Weaver, married William Smith. Naming and then renaming a daughter Mary Ann is also supportive.
Ancestry's Lancashire, England, Deaths and Burials, 1813-1986 records the burial of Thomas Weaver on June 19 1830 at St. John's Church of England, Preston. Thomas Weaver's age is given as 26 implying a year of birth about 1803 to 1804, and his residence as Tithe Barn St. No profession or other information is recorded.
If this is the burial of Catherine King's first husband Thomas Weaver, then who is the father of Catherine's daughter Martha born about 1834? The baptism for Martha Weaver in 1841 does not record the name of Martha's father. The likeliest explanation is Catherine (King) Weaver gave birth to Martha while a widow. She waited to baptize Martha until after her marriage to William Smith, and then baptized Mary Ann Smith, John Fergus Smith, and Martha Weaver on the same day.
The Lancashire OnLine Parish Clerks website contains a transcript for the burial of John King on September 15 1811 at Saint John, Preston. John King's age is recorded as 26 implying a year of birth about 1784 to 1785. No other information is transcribed. Ancestry's Lancashire, England, Deaths and Burials, 1813-1986 contains burials for Saint John Preston, but beginning in 1813. This John King is unlikely to be Catherine King's father, as he was only about 19 or so years old at Catherine's birth.
Ancestry's Lancashire, England, Deaths and Burials, 1813-1986 records the burial of John King age 53 of Bolton Court on December 9 1824 at Saint John, Preston. John King's age implies a year of birth about 1771. It is more likely this John King is Catherine King's father than John King age 26 who died in 1811.
To summarize:
1. Catherine (King) (Weaver) Smith's implied year of birth is consistent with the baptism of Catharine, daughter of John and Ann King, born May 1804 and baptized June 3 1804 at Saint John, Preston.
2. Thomas Weaver and Catherine King reside on Bolton Street at least during 1826 and 1827.
3. John King age 53 of Bolton Court is buried December 9 1824 at Saint John, Preston.
The connection of Thomas Weaver and Catherine King as well as John King to Bolton Court is promising. But, only Catherine King's County of birth (Lancashire) is known. It is preferable to have further evidence to determine if Catherine King, wife of Thomas Weaver and William Smith, is Catherine, daughter of John and Ann King.
Ancestry's Lancashire, England, Deaths and Burials, 1813-1986 records the burial of Ann age 60, wife of John King, abode Lower Wyresdale buried September 9 1839 at St. Helen, Garstang, Lancashire. Garstang is 10 miles north of Preston. Ann King's implied year of birth about 1779 is consistent with being the mother of Catherine King, but there is no current evidence to indicate she is.
The 1841 Census of Nether Wyresdale (near Garstang) records John King age 60 Cotton Mill Card Catter and Hannah Wilkinson age 20 F[emale] S[ervant], both born Lancashire.
The 1851 Census of Nether Wyresdale (near Garstang) records John King age 82 Boarder Formerly Cotton Card Master residing with John Desham age 39 Farmer and his mother Betty Desham age 62 Housekeeper; all born Lancashire Wyresdale.
Ancestry's Lancashire, England, Deaths and Burials, 1813-1986 records the burial of John King age 83 abode Wyresdale on February 6 1862 at St. Helen, Garstang, Lancashire.
There is no current evidence to indicate this John King is the father of Catherine King, wife of Thomas Weaver and William Smith.
