Notes |
- Mary Ann Smith, daughter of William Smith and Catherine King, is not recorded with her father and brother John in the 1851 Census. William Smith age 42 Hand Loom Weaver Cotton born Cumberland Carlisle is with wife Margaret Smith age 39 Hand Loom Weaver Cotton born Ireland, step son James Stenton age 16 Hand Loom Weaver Cotton born Cumberland Carlisle, son John Smith age 10 born Lancashire Preston, and step son Peter Stenton age 8 born Cumberland Carlisle; residing Willow Holm, Caldewgate, Carlisle.
TheGenealogist search of the 1851 Census of Cumberland for Mary Smith age 11 +/- 5 years with a Birthcounty of Lancashire found only one whose father is William Smith. But this Mary Ann is born in Wavertree, not Preston, and this William Smith's occupation is Locomotive Engine Driver. So, this is not Mary Ann Smith, daughter of William Smith and Catherine King. So, if Mary Ann Smith is recorded in Cumberland in the 1851 Census, she is not recorded with her correct Birthcounty of Lancashire.
TheGenealogist search of the 1851 Census of Cumberland for Mary Smith age 12 +/- 5 years with no Birthcounty specified found 52 candidates with 11 named Mary Ann and 1 named Mary A. Only 2 Mary Ann/A's are not a Daughter or a Grand Daughter (i.e. are not living with a parent or grandparent as Head) - a Wife's Niece (age 11) and a Sister (age 10), both recorded as born in Carlisle.
Mary Ann Sister is the sister of Ann Smith who is unmarried, age 27 (born about 1823), born in Carlisle, and residing in Maryport. But William Smith, father of Mary Ann Smith, was born about 1808 and so was about 15 when Ann Smith was born. It is unlikely Ann and therefore Mary Ann Sister are the daughters of William Smith. The 1841 Census for William Smith and Catherine King's family has no children older than Martha age 6. Also, Mary Ann Sister is recorded as a Scholar but Mary Ann, wife of Edward James Brown, could not write.
Of all the Mary's age 10 to 14, only one other Mary is not a Daughter. She is a Pauper which doesn't fit William's circumstances (i.e. working as a weaver).
The most likely candidate to be Mary Ann, daughter of William Smith, in the 1851 Census of Cumberland is Mary Ann Smith residing with William P. and Isabella Stubbs on Pack Horse Lane, English Street, Carlisle. This Mary Ann Smith is Wife's Niece, age 11, and occupation Servant.
As Mary Ann Smith is recorded as Isabella's niece and Mary Ann's surname is Smith, she is most likely the daughter of Isabella's brother (i.e. unless Isabella had a sister who married a Smith or a sister with an illegitimate daughter). William P. and Isabella Stubbs are recorded as Innkeepers. In the 1847 History, Gazetteer & Directory of Cumberland; William P. Stubbs is listed with the Jolly Guardsman in Pack Horse Lane under Hotels, Inns, and Taverns. Isabella Smith's first marriage was to William Pattinson Stubbs on September 11, 1836 in Saint Mary, Carlisle.
Mary Ann Smith age 11 Wife's Niece is consistent with the age of Mary Ann, daughter of William Smith and Catherine King, born October 10 1838 and age 12 at the 1851 Census. Unfortunately, the 1851 Census records Mary Ann Smith, Wife's Niece, as born in Carlisle whereas Mary Ann, daughter of William Smith and Catherine King, was born in Preston, Lancashire. But, as described above, Mary Ann, daughter of William Smith and Catherine King, does not reside with her father William Smith in the 1851 Census of Carlisle, and does not have her county of birth of Lancashire properly recorded in the 1851 Census.
It is reasonable to conclude Mary Ann, daughter of William Smith and Catherine King, resided with William Pattinson Stubbs and Isabella Smith in the 1851 Census of Carlisle, and was Isabella Smith's Niece.
The Marriage Registration for Isabella (Smith) Stubbs' second marriage to James Dinwoodie on September 1, 1858 in Carlisle confirms her maiden surname is Smith as it records Isabella's father as Francis Smith. Her father Francis Smith's occupation is Cotton Weaver, and he is deceased.
Isabella Smith, wife of William Pattinson Stubbs, is age 36 in the 1851 Census. This implies a year of birth about 1814 or 1815. This date of birth is close to the baptism of Isabella Smith, daughter of Francis Smith and Martha Lancelot, on December 25 1813. Isabella Smith, wife of James Dinwoodie, is age 41 at her marriage to James Dinwoodie in September 1858 and age 43 in the 1861 Census of Carlisle, indicating she could be optimistic about her age. There is a Death Registration for Isabella Dinwoodie in Carlisle in October-December 1887. As well, there is an entry in the Carlisle Cemetery Index for Isabella Dinwoodie with a date of death given as December 24 1887. Isabella's age in her Death Registration is recorded as 74. A date of death of December 24 1887 and an age at death of 74 implies a date of birth in 1813 which is when Isabella Smith, daughter of Francis Smith and Martha Lancelot, was baptized. Isabella gave her place of birth as Carlisle in both the 1851 and 1861 Censuses.
Based on FamilySearch's England Births and Christenings, 1538-1975; there are only two Smith families baptizing children in Saint Mary, Carlisle and Saint Cuthbert, Carlisle between 1800 and 1820 who have children named both William and Isabella. They are Francis Smith and Martha Lancelot, and William Smith and Mary Byers.
Mary's maiden surname is not recorded for her William's baptism but is recorded as Byers for her Isabella's baptism. I assume there is only one William and Mary Smith family in Carlisle between 1800 and 1820.
Isabella, daughter of William Smith and Mary Byers, is baptized July 7 1812 at Saint Mary, Carlisle. Isabella, daughter of Francis Smith and Martha Lancelot is baptized December 25 1813 at Saint Mary, Carlisle. These Isabella's are baptized sufficiently close together that they can not be definitely identified based only on their given ages.
William Smith, father of Mary Ann, was consistent about his age; namely 42 in the 1851 Census, 52 in the 1861 Census, and 62 in the 1871 Census. So, William Smith, father of Mary Ann, was born in 1808 or 1809.
William Smith and Mary Byers baptize 2 sons named William: first on August 31 1817 and second on October 3, 1819. Presumably, the first William died prior to the baptism of the second William. The second William is born too late to be William Smith, father of Mary Ann Smith.
William, son of Francis Smith and Martha Lancelot, is baptized January 30 1809 at Saint Mary, Carlisle. This is consistent with the age of William Smith, father of Mary Ann Smith.
Thus, of the only 2 Smith families baptizing children in Saint Mary, Carlisle and Saint Cuthbert, Carlisle between 1800 and 1820 who have children named both William and Isabella, only Francis Smith and Martha Lancelot's son William is born in a year consistent with William Smith, father of Mary Ann Smith.
Thus, it is reasonable to conclude William Smith, husband of Catherine King and father of Mary Ann Smith, is the son of Francis Smith and Martha Lancelot.
FamilySearch's England, Cheshire Parish Registers, 1538-2000 records the marriage of Francis Smith age 22 Soldier of this Parish and Martha Lancelot age 19 Spinster of this chapelry on November 6 1793 in Witton, Northwich, Cheshire.
FamilySearch's England, Cheshire Marriage Bond and Allegations, 1606-1900 records the Bond between Jonathan Lancelot Salt Boiler of Leftwich in the County of Chester and Francis Smith Weaver of Northwich in the County of Chester for the marriage of Francis Smith age 22 and Martha Lancelot age 19 of Northwich, daughter of Jonathan Lancelot. The Bond is dated November 5 1793 in the Parochial Chapelry of Witton in the County of Chester, and is a requirement to obtain the Marriage Licence. The date is November 5 1793, the day before the above marriage.
This is a candidate to be the marriage of William Smith's parents Francis Smith and Martha Lancelot. Unfortunately, there is no evidence William Smith's parents came from Cheshire. Indeed, the Francis Smith found in the 1841 Census of Carlisle is recorded as born in the County of Cumberland.
According to the Marriage Bond, Francis Smith is born about 1771 (age 22 in November 1793). This is reasonably consistent with Francis Smith's year of birth of 1767 from his Death Registration (age 75 in September 1842). Also, Martha Lancelot is an unusual name.
So, it seems reasonable to assume it is the Francis Smith and Martha Lancelot who married on November 6, 1793 in Witton, Northwich, Cheshire who are the parents of William Smith, husband of Catherine King and father of Mary Ann Smith.
Neither FamilySearch's England, Cheshire Parish Registers, 1538-2000 nor FamilySearch's England, Cheshire Bishop's Transcripts, 1598-1900 record the baptism of a Francis (i.e. male) Smith between 1765 and 1780.
James, son of Francis Smith (Occupation - Weaver) and Martha Lancely, is baptized July 22 1798 at Saint Nicholas, Liverpool, Lancashire. James was born January 17 1798. Although Martha's surname is not quite spelled as Lancelot in this baptism, it is likely this is the baptism of the son of Francis Smith and Martha Lancelot who married November 6 1793 in Witton, Northwich.
James is identified as the second child of Francis Smith and Martha Lancely which is reasonably consistent with a marriage in late 1793. Unfortunately, James' baptism does not record the Parish of Francis Smith and Martha Lancely's marriage (although the baptism form has a column for this).
James' baptism indicates Francis Smith and Martha Lancelot moved from Witton, Northwich, Cheshire in or before 1798.
