- In an email on January 2 2016, Paul Landry states:
The placement of Marie Landry (who married Grégoire Boudreau) was made by Stephen White on Oct 2, 2001 and then reviewed again on Jan 23, 2002. I did place a note questioning this placement after reviewing the will. Marie Landry's birthdate varies greatly in the census returns, anywhere from 1806 to 1811. This also makes me question her placement.
I believe she is a daughter of one of Jean's siblings, but I don't know which one for sure. The best guess I would make is she might be a daughter of Thomas Landry and Magdeline Deveau. There are 2 unidentified daughters in that family from the 1813 military census.
There is no mention of Marie Landry, wife of Grégoire Boudrot, in Jean Landry's Will of January 13 1854. The Will states the property is to be "divided among the heirs of all my sons and daughters". The Will identifies Jean Landry's daughters as Amelia Degout (sic), wife of Ferdinand Degout (sic), and Sophia Pettipas (sic), wife of Vital Pettipas (sic). Marie Landry, wife of Grégoire Boudrot, dies in 1896 and so should be in the Will.
The 1811 Census of River Bourgeois records John Landry with 1 Female under 14. The 1813 Militia Roll for River Bourgeois records John Landry with 2 Girls. This is consistent with daughters Amelia and Sophia recorded in John Landry's Will.
The 1861 Census of D'Escousse records Gregory Boudrot in a family of 3 Males and 2 Females; consisting of 2 Males 20-30 Single, 1 Female 20-30 Single, 1 Male 60-70 Married, and 1 Female 60-70 Married (Polling District 3 Abstract 3 Family 23).
The 1871 Census of D'Escousse records Désiré Boudreau age 38 Seaman, wife Virginia age 40, Abram age 7, Benjamin age 4, and Mary age 65 Widow; all born NS (Division 2 Page 30 Family 118).
It is reasonable to believe Mary Boudreau age 65 Widow is Marie Landry, wife of Grégoire Boudrot, for the following reasons:
1. Désiré Boudrot, son of Grégoire Boudrot and Marie Landry, and Virgine Boudrot, daughter of Pierre Boudrot and Henriette Girouard, marry January 11 1858 in Arichat. So, Mary Boudreau age 65 Widow resides with her son.
2. The 1871 Census of D'Escousse Nominal Return of the Deaths within last twelve months records the death of Grégoire Boudreau age 70 in November 1870 of Pleurisy. This Grégoire Boudreau age 70 is the husband of Marie Landry.
3. The ages of both Grégoire Boudreau age 70 and Marie Boudreau age 65 are consistent with their ages from other sources.
The 1881 Census of D'Escousse records Bastin McPhee age 49 Fisherman, wife Marie McPhee age 52, Anney McPhee age 22, Henry McPhee age 20 Fisherman, Julia McPhee age 15, Jeffry McPhee age 14, Simon McPhee age 10, Sabine McPhee age 4, and Marie Boudrot age 75 Widow; all born NS (Page 57-58 Family 276).
Marie Boudrot, daughter of Grégoire Boudrot and Marie Landry, and Sebastien McPhee, son of Louis McPhee and Anne Camus, marry January 24 1853 in River Bourgeois.
The 1891 Census of D'Escousse records Peter Boudrot age 45 Seaman & Farmer, wife Marine age 34, daughter Memmie (?) age 10, domestic Mary age 84 Widow, domestic Amelia age 64, and daughter Eliza age 7; all born NS (Page 14 Family 69).
Richmond County, Nova Scotia Parish Records website records baptisms in D'Escousse for the following children of Pierre Boudrot and Marine McPhee:
1. Emelie Elizabeth born December 17 1880
2. Marie Elizabeth Hilda born October 25 1883
It is reasonable to conclude the above 1891 Census entry is for the family of Pierre Boudrot and Marine McPhee.
FamilySearch's Nova Scotia, Antigonish Catholic Diocese, 1823-1905 records the baptism of Marine Anne McPhy born December 10 1853, daughter of Sebastien McPhy and Marie Boudrault, on January 8 1854 in River Bourgeois. Marine Anne McPhee is the granddaughter of Grégoire Boudrot and Marie Landry (Baptism Image 37 of 217).
Nova Scotia Historical Vital Statistics records the death of Marine Boudreau age 80 born December 10 1853, daughter of Bastien McPhie born River Bourgeois and Heriettte Boudreau born River Bourgeois, and wife of Peter Boudreau.
It is reasonable to conclude Marine Boudrot, wife of Peter Boudrot, is the granddaughter of Grégoire Boudrot and Marie Landry. It is also reasonable to conclude domestic Mary Boudrot age 84 Widow in the 1891 Census of D'Escousse is Marie Landry, wife of Grégoire Boudrot.
Marie Landry's ages are recorded as follows for various events:
1861 Census age 60-70, implying a year of birth about 1790-1800
1871 Census age 65, implying a year of birth about 1805-1806
1881 Census age 75, implying a year of birth about 1805-1806
1891 Census age 84, implying a year of birth about 1806-1807
1896 Burial age 91, implying a year of birth about 1804
Except for the 1861 Census, Marie Landry's ages are quite consistent. It is reasonable to believe Marie Landry was born about 1805 plus or minus 1 year.
Marie Landry's approximate year of birth indicates she should be recorded in the 1811 Census as a Female under 14 and in the 1813 Militia Roll as a Girl. Jean Landry and Marie Dugas' 1 Female under 14 in the 1811 Census and 2 Girls in the 1813 Militia Roll are consistent with Amelia and Sophia who are known to be Jean Landry and Marie Dugas' daughters from Jean Landry's Will.
It seems unlikely Marie Landry, wife of Grégoire Boudrot, is the daughter of Jean Landry and Marie Dugas.
The sons of Pierre Landry and Anne Clergé have the following Females under 14 in the 1811 Census and Girls in the 1813 Militia Roll:
1811 1813
Pierre Jean 4 4
Gabriel Charles 1 0
Beloni 3 3
Thomas 1 2
Jean 1 2
Anselme 3 4
Gabriel Charles is likely not a candidate to the father of Marie Landry, wife of Grégoire Boudrot, as he has no Girls in the 1813 Census. Perhaps, his 1 Female under 14 in 1811 died before 1813. Having also eliminated Jean Landry as a candidate, this still leaves Pierre Jean, Beloni, Thomas, and Anselme as candidates.
