- The 1811 Census of D'Escousse records only 2 Poirier families; namely:
1. Charles Poirier Fisherman with 1 Male 14-60, 3 Females 14-60, 1 Male or Female over 60, 5 Males under 14, 1 Female under 14, and 9 Males and Females Unmarried
2. Widow Peter Poirier with 3 Females 14-60, 4 Males under 14, 4 Females under 14, and 8 Males and Females Unmarried
Stephen A. White's article Les fondateurs de la paroisse d'Arichat, Cap-Breton states:
1. Pierre Poirier, son of Charles Poirier and Marguerite Vigneau, born about 1760, married, Nathalie dite Anasthasie Bonin, daughter of Jean François Bonin and Marguerite Josse.
2. Charles Poirier, son of Charles Poirier and Marguerite Vigneau, born at Port Toulouse in 1750 married (1) about 1780 Rose McDonald, daughter of Thomas McDonald and Marie Hill, and (2) to Dorothée Petitpas. Charles and Rose had a large family in D'Escousse.
The transcript of St. Hyacinth, D'Escousse baptisms between 1832 and 1839 records only 2 Poirier families headed by a Jean Poirier; namely Jean Poirier, husband of Charlotte Grenon, and Jean Marie Poirier, husband of Catherine Josse.
The 1838 Census of D'Escousse records only 2 Poirier families headed by a Jean Poirier; namely:
1. Jean Poirier and Charlotte with 1 Male under 6, 2 Females under 6, and 1 Female 6-14 for a total of 6 persons
2. Jean M Poirier and Catherine with 2 Males under 6, 3 Females 6-14, and 2 Females over 14 for a total of 9 persons
It is reasonable to believe Jean Poirier and Jean Marie Poirier belong to one of the Poirier families in the 1811 Census of D'Escousse, although likely not to the same one.
Nova Scotia Historical Vital Statistics records the death of John Poirier age 72 Widower born Lower D'Escousse, son of Charles Poirier [mother not recorded], died May 22 1866 in D'Escousse. There is a St. Hyacinth Church, D'Escousse burial for Jean Poirier, husband of Charlotte Grenon, on May 24 1866.
So, Jean Poirier, husband of Charlotte Grenon, is the son of Charles Poirier indicating Jean Marie is the son of Pierre Poirier.
