- As described in the Notes for Claude Coste, it is reasonable to believe Claude Coste who married Marguerite Vigneau is the son of Jacques Coste and Françoise Petitpas. Claude's presence in the 1752 Census as the son of Jacques Coste and Françoise Petitpas supports this.
It is also reasonable to believe Madeleine Coste, wife of Jean Boucher, is descended from Claude Coste and Marguerite Vigneau as they are the only Coste family recorded in Father Bailly's Register.
The 1813 Militia Roll for Arichat records Joseph Bouche age 38 born Cape Breton no acres residing with 1 Woman, no Boy, and no Girls. It is reasonable to conclude he is Joseph Bouche son of Jno recorded in the 1811 Census of Arichat, and so is the son of Jean Boucher and Madeleine Coste. See Notes for Joseph Boucher, husband of Angélique Meunier, for further information.
Joseph Bouche age 38 in the 1813 Militia Roll for Arichat was born about 1775. With a child born about 1775, it is reasonable to believe Madeleine Coste is the daughter, not the granddaughter, of Claude Coste and Marguerite Vigneau.
Father Bailly baptized 5 children of Claude Coste and Marguerite Vigneau with the oldest child Jean born November 15 1760. There is no baptism for a daughter Madeleine of Claude Coste and Marguerite Vigneau. It is reasonable to conclude Madeleine Coste, wife of Jean Boucher, was born prior to 1760.
The 1752 Census of Île Royale in Port Toulouse records Jacques Coste age 47 Builder native of Port Royal, wife Françoise Petitpas age 45 native of la Cadie, and son Claude age 22; indicating Claude Coste and Marguerite Vigneau have not yet married. So, Madeleine Coste is born in or after 1753.
The Nova Scotia Archives records a transcription of the following land petition from John Bushee (Bouches):
1803 Bushee (Bouches), John
Petition for grant of 400 acres at Little Tracadie near Arichat for him, his wife and five children. May 1809
It is not clear if the petition was written in 1803 or in 1809. But it does indicate Madeleine Coste, wife of Jean Boucher, died after this petition.
The 1811 Census of Arichat records Pierre Bouche son of Jno with 1 Male 14-60, 1 Female 14-60, 1 Male or Female over 60, and 2 Unmarried Males and Females. It is reasonable to conclude the unmarried person is widowed.
Pierre Boucher's brothers Simon and Pierre are both recorded in the 1811 Census of Arichat with 1 Female 14-60 (their wives) and no Males or Females over 60. So, their mother Madeleine Coste does not reside with either of them.
As Pierre Boucher is not yet married, the 1 Male or Female over 60 residing with him can not be a father in law or mother in law. So, the likeliest candidate for the widowed Male or Female over 60 is Madeleine Coste, mother of Pierre Boucher.
As Madeleine Coste is born between 1753 and 1758, she would not be over 60 in 1811. But she is close to 60.
