Notes |
- FamilySearch's Newfoundland Vital Statistics, 1753-1893 records 4 marriages between 1835 and 1855, one of which may be for Frances, daughter of Charles Penney and Elizabeth Ash. These marriages are (in chronological order):
1. Frances Penney of Carbonear and Francis Pike of Clown's Cove on January 5 1843 in Carbonear. The witnesses are Wm Udell and Eliza Legg.
2. Frances Penney of Carbonear and Frederick Howell of Carbonear on December 27 1844 in Carbonear. The witnesses are Robert Howell and Julia Ash.
3. Frances Penney of Western Bay and Edward Milley of Western Bay on November 14 1850 in Western Bay. The witnesses are William Perfeu (?) and Isaac Perry.
4. Frances Penney of Otterbury and William Bolden of Otterbury on December 22 1853 in Salmon Cove. The witnesses are Henry Peckham and Robert Parsons.
There is, of course, no guarantee Frances Penney's marriage is recorded in FamilySearch's Newfoundland Vital Statistics, 1753-1893.
Of the above marriages, the first 2 involving Frances Penney "of Carbonear" seem more likely.
The marriage of Frances Penney and Francis Pike has Wm Udell as a witness.
Ted Rowe's Heroes & Rogues and the Story of Heart's Content refers (page 89) to the 1852 marriage of Thomas Hopkins and Eleanor Udell. Eleanor is from a Methodist family in Carbonear. Richard Penney is mentioned as "apparently a relative of Eleanor Udell".
Eleanor Udell Hopkin's tombstone in Heart's Content Methodist Cemetery records her date of death as November 3 1892 and her age as 65, implying a year of birth about 1827. There is an Eleanor Udle baptized November 4 1827 in Carbonear Methodist and her place of birth is Carbonear. Her parents are William and Jane Udle. William Udell (Bachelor of Carbonear) and Jane Penney (Spinster of Carbonear) married December 7 1826 in Harbour Grace Church of England.
Perhaps, Richard Penney and Eleanor Udell were first cousins, and so Charles Penney and Jane Penney were siblings. If so, the presence of William Udell as a witness is supportive of Mary Penney, wife of Francis Pike, being the daughter of Charles Penney and Elizabeth Ash.
The marriage of Frances Penney and Frederick Howell has Julia Ash as a witness.
Frances is the daughter of Charles Penney and Elizabeth Ash. So having an Ash as a witness to Frances' marriage is supportive of Mary Penney, wife of Frederick Howell, being the daughter of Charles Penney and Elizabeth Ash.
