Notes |
- David Pike's Family History & Genealogy Resources website records the following baptisms at Carbonear Methodist:
1. Diana born August 28 1810, daughter of Thomas and Mary Pike, on September 1810
2. Caroline Spencer, daughter of Thomas (of John) (Planter) and Mary Pike of Carbonear, on December 1827
It is reasonable to conclude Mary Spencer?, wife of Thomas Pike, was born before 1795 and died in or after 1827.
David Pike's Family History & Genealogy Resources website records the following burials of a Mary Pike which satisfy these criteria, all at Carbonear Methodist:
1. Mary Pike age 47 of Mosquito on December 14 1828 (born about 1781)
2. Mary Pike age 81 of Carbonear South Side on June 23 1861 (born about 1779-1780)
3. Mary Pike age 75 of Carbonear on January 21 1840 (born about 1764)
It is not reasonable to believe the wife of Thomas Pike is Mary Pike age 75 of Carbonear buried January 21 1840 at Carbonear Methodist. This Mary Pike is born about 1764 and was about 63 at the baptism of Caroline Spencer, daughter of Thomas Pike and Mary Spencer?. So, she is too old to be Caroline Spencer's mother.
David Pike's Family History & Genealogy Resources website has audio recordings of Carbonear Methodist Cemetery tombstones including "Sacred to the Memory of John Pike who departed this life 18th July 1836 aged 67 years" adjacent to tombstone for "Mary the wife of John Pike of Mosquitto who departed this life 11th December 1828 Aged 47 Years”. So, Mary Pike age 47 of Mosquito buried December 14 1828 is the wife of John Pike.
This leaves Mary Pike age 81 of Carbonear South Side buried June 23 1861 as the only remaining known candidate. Her implied year of birth about 1779-1780 is consistent with bearing children starting in 1810, but less consistent with bearing a child in 1827 (at about age 47). It is not known if Thomas Pike and Mary Spencer? resided in Carbonear South Side.
Known candidates for the burial of Mary Pike age 81 of Carbonear South Side on June 23 1861 are:
1. Mary, daughter of John and Ann Pike, baptized October 13 1776 Harbour Grace Church of England
2. Mary Spencer?, wife of Thomas Pike
3. Mary unknown, wife of William Pike
4. Mary Butt, wife of Alfred Pike
Mary, daughter of John and Ann Pike, may have married or died young.
Mary unknown, wife of William Pike, would likely be recorded with a residence of Mosquito at her burial as that is their residence at the baptisms of their children.
Alfred Pike, husband of Mary Butt, was born about 1799 and their last known child was born in 1833. Mary Pike age 81 of Carbonear South Side buried June 23 1861 was born about 1779-1780. It is unlikely she is Mary Butt, wife of Alfred Pike, as she was about 53 when Alfred Pike and Mary Butt's last known child was born.
It seems more likely Mary Pike age 81 of Carbonear South Side buried June 23 1861 is the wife of Thomas Pike.
